    Alternator wiring-gctid392502

    Iv'e got a 1988 32' motoryacht with gas 305 us marine engines. There are two orange wires near the alternator and at the time I purchased the boat only one was connected. In the picture below Iv'e removed the alternator to expose the wiring, the orange with the black cap and the yellow wire were the ones connected. The other orange wire (with white tag) Iv'e covered with electical tape at the connector was not. My questions is should this other wire be connected as well. Iv'e tried to follow the electical schematic only to confuse myself further. Any thoughts or answers would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

      Are you replacing an alternator?

      Or are you reconnecting one?

      What model alternator?

        Hello Rick,

        thanks for the reply. Alternator has been tested by quality shop and proved good. No need to replace. It is the wiring of the rear orange wire that I'm confused about. I believe it to be Motorola although it also says transpo on the black plastic part. Can't make out the model number. Here are some pictures.

          Here is a Motorola Marine wiring diagram below. Model number not stated.

          Where you have a small gauge green wire, this should be a #10 or perhaps #8 black wire for your year model boat.

          This is the alternator chassis to engine block "Negative".

          (the image calls this a "ground"...... with 12 vdc we have Negatives)

          You'll need to find which one in your harness is your ignition circuit, and which one is the sensing lead (battery power).

          Ignition = excite

          Batt power = voltage sensing

          Connect accordingly, and you should be OK.
