1989 omc cobra 5.7.....I need to remove the shift cable hose from the inner transom...Its bad...engine is out..replaced coupler and water intake hose to the power steeing cooler.....now trying to remove the shift cable hose....Do I have to take off the inner transom housing which includes the steering actuator....is there a way to remove it without doing so? I hope so..Im getting tired...maybe a special tool? Anyone?

From the parts diagram - it is screwed to the gimbal housing (transom housing) from the inside. You should be able to see the end of the hose and the nut down below the steering arm in the transom cutout.

I just measured the nut at the end of the shift hose. It's 1 1/8 ". It's skinny though. You're gonna need a thin wrench. None of my adjustable wrenches will fit on it. If you've got the engine out, pull off the bell housing and y-pipe. You'll have easy access to it. While you are in there you can change the y-pipe seal. You'll probably never get in there again.

Remove Just the y pipe? Yes the nut is like recessed within the inner transom housing, I just cant believe how fing stupid the designers are, First of all its a simple shift cable hose..It cost me $155 bucks and secondly..why not make a fitting that projects out a few inchs so you can unscrew it without removing the engine and while im on the subject of moronic engineers...why not make a split bell housing that is designed so it has 2 parts a top and a bottom...then you could remove the top, change the coupler...and not have to remove the engine... I mean really.....there are at least 5 ways that water can come ino the boat...if a part fails....I just cant believe the stupidity of this design..next boat will have straight shafts..im off to takel the hose...thanks

y pipe is off and I still cant access the nut....it is an 1 5/16 nut...is there a special tool to use...does a crows foot work, or a thin wrench....do I have to take off the inner transon plate? What gives? So frustrated this lousy hose is preventing me from dropping the engine back in. spent 6 hours this morning and all I have to show for it is bleeding knuckles and a $700 parts bill and no boat. Nut is still on...Im tempted to cut it off but the problem is that the shift cable is in the way and to remove the shift cable you have to disassemble the gimbal housing to back off the brass shift cable nut which holds the sheath in place god have mercy on these f'ing engineers
