trim not going up, (39)99 capri, merc alpha-noob question-gctid390995

    Hi everyone,

I just joined the forum as I bought my first boat last week, a '99 2050LS capri.

The only significant problem I have is that the motor will tilt down but not up. When I flip the up/down switch to "up" nothing happens, no noise at all. It moves up fine in the trailer mode, so I think that the motor is OK. I am getting 12V from the switch and down at the connection near the hydraulic pump. Any ideas on where to start? I did the forum search but I am still not exactly sure where to go from here.

I'm also not sure of the difference between the "up" switch and the trailer switch--does the trailer switch just allow it to travel farther?

Sorry about the noob questions. i'm excited to get the boat on the water and am hoping to take it out this weekend.

Yes the trailer button is to allow the drive to travel up further to clear the ground for trailering.

I had the same issue with mine and found that I had a broken wire from inside the transom to the drive limit switch.

I fitted a bypass to the limit switch and all is well.

here is a handy link to set the limit switch and positioning switch. - http://www.mercstuff.com/trim_limit.htm

I never really used the limit switch and always set the position of the drive by the way the boat performed.

Are you sure that your dropping the leg to the bottom of it's travel with the down switch? The range of the up switch is quite limited before it cuts out. It's designed that way to prevent the inadverent running of the boat with the leg trimmed too high. The trailering button will indeed take over and raise the leg to it's full up position.

You may be right, I have the boat on the trailer and I can't drop the prop totally. I'll drive it up on some blocks so I can lower it more. It doesn't look like it has much farther to go, but you never know.

        Thanks
