Has anyone encountered and tried this before? Was the TV picture quality ok?

I'm looking at getting a TV for the boat. I already have a portable 7" DVD player that has the 3.5mm A/V out cable that supplies the Red/White/Yellow leads (Composite).
If I can save $80 and get a flat(er) screen TV versus getting one with the built in DVD player, I'm gonna do that.
The TV I'm looking at has this hybrid input, and the specs clearly state the Green Component is to be used as the Yellow of a Composite input. It is also labelled Video/Y.
If anyone has experience with this specific shared input mode, is the picture quality worth saving the $80, or should I get the model with the DVD built in (which interestingly enough, has the dedicated Yellow Composite in)?
