The older engines were not designed for the newer blends of fuels. The rubber seals in my older engine disolved.

    Tender Outboard 1971 Mercury 4hp 2 Stroke-gctid389890

Hello to all; Nikko donated a great little outboard to me ....... 1971 Mercury 4hp 2 stroke ..... a real beauty (I love that original Merc look). Its in wonderful shape BUTTTTT, when you slow engine down in order to shift into gear it has a very rough idle & some times quits (once we get warmed up). After running at normal speeds and then coming off on the throttle it will eventually stall out just as you get into shift range. Throw the choke back on and she'll start second or third pull every time ... off with the choke and idle her up, and we are ready to go agin. Runs well off idle and at WOT. When I got it I changed lower unit lube, spark plug and impeller. Just need some advice on were I need to start looking, Carb, Idle Mix, Fuel Pump, Spark ?........ Thanks to all!
Working...
