  • VP275 How to change Bearing 1986 2450 Ciera-gctid388544

Well just went to change the driveshaft bellows and that was no problem but I did notice that the ball bearing on the bottom of the transmission is going bad. I rebuild auto transmissions so I'm ok with changing this but wanted any tips or know how from all you VP guru's!! Also my trim tabs don't work, does anybody have the schematics for the tab hydrolics? And a third question, the steering fork that bolts to the sides of the helmet has alot of play going up through he shield. Is there a bushing that supports that, if so how bad is it to change. Thanks in advance, this forum is why I bought a second bayliner!!!

I believe that we're talking about the lower driven gear bearing, SEQ # 38 here, correct?

This is an angular contact bearing, and is directional.

What causes you to think that it's going bad?

If this bearing is going bad, I'd suggest that the Bearing Box bearings are also in need of replacement.... in particular if this is V-8 powered.

It would also be wise to replace the eccentric piston seal.... SEQ #62. This seal is also directional.

Yes, there are two collar steering fork bushings that can be replaced that will usually rid the system of the play that you are seeing.

Now would be a good time to do this while the transmission is removed.

The V-ring seal should also be replaced.

That is the bearing I was talking about. The cage for the ball elements is damaged. It is a V8 (AQ260A), do you have a transmission I can purchase from you?

I do not have one at this time. They don't sit here very long when I do.

I do have great access to these that are good and are in need of a re-seal, if interested.

I also offer over-haul service via shipping back and forth. A transmission will ship in the large USPS flat rate box for about $15 or so.

I have an extra one on my 270 drive with a aq151 engine. I could send you that one for a reseal. Is it the same transmission as a 275? If it is the only problem is it has a 10 spline yoke... It works great, how much for the seal job and possible changing the yoke to the fine spline that I have on my aq260 PDS?

The 270, 275, 280 and first generation 290 can interchange when the female yoke is correct.

The 270 will be minus the oil fill port.

The 275, 280 and 290 will have the oil fill port.

If you were to have a 275A, this is slightly different, but is still a candidate for you.

Water in the drive oil and the resulting condensation and rust likes to wipe out that upper bearing, as it is not submerged in the oil like the others. The 275 box from the 2150 should work as long as the yoke gets changed and will be in alot better shape having been behind a 4-cylinder.
