I have the 4 cyl, Volvo and it fires right up and idles. The problem is the darn thing will not accelerate. When you try to accelerate the engine dies. I have new points, rotor, plugs and condenser.
Have you replaced the fuel filters? One in the pump bowl one at the carb inlet?
My Merc 3.0 will start showing the same symptom from time to time. When it does I'll run it on the muffs with the spark arrestor off. Run up to 2500 RPM and cover the carb with my hand untill she stalls. Do it 2 or 3 times and she runs fine the rest of the year. The vacuum pulls out any buildup in the jets. If that doesn't work it's time for a carb rebuild.
Sounds like a carb issue, check filters and clean/rebuild the carb. Wouldn't hurt to throw a timing light on it and make sure it is advancing as well and the timing is set right.
Please fill in your signiture for what engine/drive you have for our info.
