    Adding a Fuel tank 1989 2655-gctid387205

    Hi All,

I am thinking about adding a 200 litre plastic fuel (GAS) tank to my 2655. I am looking at putting it in the engine bay on the starboard side as it will fit in there behind the toilet holding tank. Also thinking that if my main tank ever starts leak ning this would be a good fix, rather than trying to remove the old tank. Is there any reason this will / will not work? Only thing I thought, is it OK to have the fuel tank higher than the engine? any feed back / comments appreciated.

I edited the fuel tank to Gas tank. We don't refer to petrol as gas in Australia.

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether this will work? Mainly about the gas tank being higher than the engine.

    Thank you in advance.

I cant see any reason why it would not work as long as it is properly installed and vented. Since the fuel is delivered via a pump whether it is higher or lower than the engine would not make a difference in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. I have the same reasoning as you. The tank will be installed correctly, vented, and tied down etc. If the main tank ever leaks it would be a very simple, much less expensive fix. In the meantime I would use the smaller tank. We use our boat all year round here, but we only really travel short distances on any single outing ( 2hours run time max). I don't like putting 450 litres in the main tank as it takes forever to use it.

        regards David

I think you are going to have quite a list to stbd. by putting roughly 300 lbs. back there. Not only that, but you will be making an a$$-heavy boat even heavier and getting up on plane will be that much more difficult with that tank full. Just for the record, I have never completely filled my 100 gallon belly tank, and replacing it is not a difficult job if it develops a leak, which mine did. IMO, bad idea, bad location.

Thanks. I will have to look into it a bit more re the weight. Might get a couple of mates to stand in that spot and see what happens before or "if" I install the tank.

I have a 2252 that someone replaced the water tank (I think it was 11 gallons) with a spare 27 gallon fuel tank. It is on the port side and sits behind the toilet holding tank. Its location is higher than the engine and about flush with the top of the deck.

You could move batteries or other heavier items to the other side if the extra weight when the reserve tank is full makes the boat list too much. Or just deal with it, only use that tank when you need the extra range, and use it first. Move fat friends to the opposite side? Trim tabs?

Your fuel tank will hold @ 53 US gallons. A full tank of petrol will weigh @ 317 pounds. Don't forget to add in the weight of the tank itself.

You will need one fat guy or two skinny guys to sit on your port rail whenever you fill that tank...

I've seen plenty of women in these parts that would be able to balance that out.

Not leaving my house, but i've seen them.

                        To answer the questions:

                        5l MPI

NO, the main tank will be empty. As I said, I only do short trips. On the odd occasion I wanted to go further I may use the main tank.

Yes, I do have trim tabs.

The plastic tank ony weighs around 1kg, 200l fuel weighs around 154kg (2 average sized people)

My 3 batteries are on the port side
