    1996 2002 w/a with a 120 force-gctid383912

Thoughts on this package please .... sounds underpowered, anyone running this combo.... hull is in good shape, new enclosure, newer trailer, ..... COMMENTS PLEASE

First off, the Force 120 is underpowered. You'll need a minimum of 150 HP and a 175 would be better. Make sure the transom is fully inspected and solid. Trailer, galvanized or not, tires aged out, single or tandem axle (tandem better)? What kind/brand electronics package comes with it?

Most folks consider Force Outboards as "Throwaways." As for a ballpark estimate, all things being equal and in workable shape, around $8,000. Things to consider, was it used in saltwater, if so, have a mechanic look for corrosion. My 1995 Trophy/150HP merc has spent it's entire life in saltwater but I have used products like saltaway flushing after most uses. The saltwater is also a consideration with the trailer, especially the brakes and bearings. I would pull a wheel and inspect, or in the alternative, jack up one rear wheel, grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to move it, do the same exercise front and rear. That will test to see if the bearings are any good.

The electronics are a plus in the sale, especially if they are semi-current. Do a search here on "Backbones" or "NMEA", boats with NMEA Backbones are a plus. Mine and much smaller Swamp Thang's backbones have been discussed quite a bit here. As an example, with a NMEA Backbone, you can electronically "Link" a GPS Chart Plotter with a VHF Radio, and if you obtained/registered a MMSI Number, during an emergency hail, your GPS position will be digitally transmitted with the mayday call to an appropriate receiving station (USCG).

One of the dreaded "Problems" with our Trophy's is a fuel tank leak due to corrosion. If you can do a pressurization test of the tank, that would be a positive thing.

Last but not least :arr when you succumb to Trophy-itis, just march up to any boat/fishing store and toss your wallet, checkbook, and credit cards inside because you are truely LOST :arr Customizing Trophys in a never ending journey. I don't think mine has gone two years straight in the same configuration If yah buy it, Your First Customizing Task is to acquire and install RABUD SCUPPERS

            To give you an idea.

My 1993 Trophy 2002 WA with extended cancas top, with the 2006 Suzuki DF 140 4 stroke, 500 hours, a Tohatsu 9.9 2 stroke kicker. a 9.9 foot inflatable dingy, a new GPSMAP 440 S with transducer, 1 downrigger (manual) anchor with 325 feet of rode, and all the safety stuff (flares, extinguisher, throwable cushion etc, and a Brutus Line puller for shrimp pots on a 98 Escort trailer sold for 17,000. here is Alaska. It was appraised at 18,700
            Boatless at this time

There are a lot of Trophy's out there. Take your time. This is my advice I should have taken. I just purchased a 1999 Trophy 2002 with a 125hp Mercury. This boat came with a factory installed hardtop rocket launchers deck flood lights. The boat is in very good shape with only about 135 hrs on it. The trailer is a galvanized two axel with disc brakes. Electronics are new Lowrance HDS5 and Lowrance vhf. It has a 30 gal Off Shore bait tank. That cost $1000 to install. I paid $14500 for allof it.

Here is the thing; I would not buy this boat again. Why, because it is severely underpowered!!! This boat struggles to make 18mph (GPS)! I thought I had a problem but after going through all the possibilities, water in the bilge, bottom, engine, prop, I find out that this is not out of line. I finally called the previous owner and he said that is the way it always ran and that he had the marine mechanic on the boat that thought it ran just fine. I also called Bayliner and they confirmed the with a 125hp engine this boat has a max top-end of 22mph. Repowering will cost 8-10K minimum. My options at this point is to live with it or sell and find another one. Like I said, it's not hard, there are a lot of them out there.

Bottom line advice, Walk away! Find a boat with a minimum 150hp, 175hp would be better. You will be so much happier.

I have been not to keen on a 120 with more weight than my 1950 capri running a 135 i/o, which i have topped @ 40 , the whole idea being to be able to get out thru jersey inlets thru chop and swell, last thing i need is an underpowered w/a, so i will probably continue to search, i havn't even offered him anything, my thought was low ball him for 4500, live with it and hang a 175 on her in a few years but, hell than she will be a 20 yr old hull so .....
