Starter replacement 1994 Mercruiser 5.0 LX alpha in 2655-gctid383292

My starter bendix is not releasing once the motor starts - screech - and occasionally has a dead spot, which is a bit scary. I ducked into the motor compartment, looks like the starter can drop without too much hassle...anyone have a mechanic do the job - how much labor?

Deliberating whether I want to tackle it. I am 6ft 2 so I would have to hang upside down in the bilge to do the job. fun.

It should be no big deal, typically the starter is just 2 bolts offset underneath the starter, you will need to shut offpower at the battery switch, get a 6 point socket so you don't strip these otherwise you will hate yourself when you have to pull the engine to remove 2 lousy bolts.

I am 6'1" and you have to go by feel but otherwise it was relatively easy to replace the starter on my 7.4 454

The whole thing took no more than 1/2 hr with me taking my time to clean the cable ends.
