My exhaust bellows has developed a crack and I was hunting up a replacement. However, the replacements are "new and improved" with cutouts to allow water to drain when bent/extended. It seems silly to replace a cracked bellows with one with several intentional cracks. What say ye?

The OMC exhaust belows is supposed to have the ribs cut on the downward side of the bellow. This allows the water to escape when you remove the boat from the water. The problem with the crack or a broken bellows is that the exhaust escapes ahead of the drive creating cavitation and prop slipage as you dive through the air pockets created by the exhaust.

That's an excellent point, perhaps, leading to the question of why the new and improved bellows is already slotted. When the unit is down, the bellows is pretty compressed, so I'm not sure how much exhaust is leaking through.

I have the "new and improved" version. I thought the same thing as you, but they seem to be working fine. With the "holes" on the bottom, they are closed up when the outdrive is down.
