    Anchor Windlass-gctid666131

Anyone know anything about Five Oceans windlasses? Good, bad, indifferent? They're quite a bit less expensive than Lewmar and some of the others. I'm looking at the S912 since I have 100 ft of 5/16" stainless steel chain and 150 ft of 9/16" rode. Thanks, Jim

On average you get what you pay for, I like my 700 Lewmar with at times 300 or more of rode out have had no problems. :P

+1 on what the fritzman said.

But I would rather say "You don't get what you don't pay for". If I always got what I paid for I would be a happy man.

Buy something cheap and you will buy something twice. (I made that up).

Yep, been there done that. a whole lot cheaper to buy the Lewmar first and last. I had an Oceans that was installed just before I purchased a boat and P.O. still had the receipt on the paperwork i received. made it exactly 14 months before i pulled it and replaced it. it was a piece of garbage.

Funny thing and I'm sure it could still be dug up, but right after I replaced it BoatUS ran an article i think was called "Windlass woes" and the winner was..... Five Oceans.

I don't know if I would buy a Lewmar again. I bought a new 700 about 7 years ago. We were on a 7 week boat holiday when the 1" brass gypsum snapped while raising the anchor. I always use a bridle so that was not the problem. The part had corrosion part of the way through. I did post on BOC how terrible the company was to deal with and their response. I ended up buying a new windlass from them at full retail and over 200.00 in shipping. I sent the part and the windlass back to them after the holidays and they repaired it at no charge but I had to pay the shipping both ways. The new one is still on my boat and working but I don't think I would buy from them again.

I did sell the repaired unit for 750.00. I paid about 1600.00 for that new one including taxes and shipping.

I did and they don't make a horizontal one that will do 5/16"chain. Jim
