I need to get a new winch for my boat as some of the teeth at bent. I have a 2006 195 Bowrider that the specs say the dry weight is 2,650. That of course is without gas in it and without me sitting in it when the boat is cranked up onto thr trailer by my fiance. I am looking at different winches and it seems the normal heavier weight winches are for 2,500lbs. Am I wrong in thinking I need 3,000lbs or is 2,500 enough? Before writing this I did not think ahead to see if anything is stamped on my current winch but I can only imagine it is original to the trailer that came with the boat.

Also I see winches saying they have 2 speeds-I never realized that mine apparently has this too! What is that for?

2500 pound rated winch is designed to put a max 2500 pound pull. To achieve the max pull on a trailer winch, you'd have to hook to the boat and lift straight up. A 2500 pound rated winch should work fine.

I would just take a look at your original winch rating (should be stamped on it as you guessed), and at least match it or go slightly higher. Smaller/cheaper winches typically just have one speed, whereas higher capacity winches often have two speeds. Two speeds are nice--like a car, you have two speeds to choose from which to pull line in or pull line off. The higher gear will pull the line in faster but require more effort, and the lower gear will pull the line in slower but be easier to crank. One of the speeds will be easier to manually pull out the cable/strap by hand just prior to loading your boat back on to the trailer. You use which ever one work best for you and/or change on the fly depending on launch/load conditions. If you pull out too much line, the higher speed is much faster at pulling in the slack.

Haha!! She does a good job. She backs the trailer down without a problem now
