    Repower a gasser with diesel.-gctid371043

Not going to do this but with the price of fuel and the amount of talk about it I am wondering about this.

Find a wreaked Dodge pickup with a cummins 5.9 diesel.

This diesel has been used in marine use and is capable of hp over 300 without stressing it and they last forever. Parts needed are all ready available except possibily the tranny/outdrive hookup.

So, why not use it for a conversion?

The older 12 valve engine would be my choice.

    What say you experts?

If you think that a 5.9 cummins will last forever, re-think the issue. the 250 to 270 older HP marine engines suck, that poorly engineered inter cooler is a nightmare!

The 200 hp NA works well.

Well nothing lasts forever. My neighbor has one with over 350,000 miles and its still a daily driver. His is the 12 valve engine.

They have gone a million miles or so.

Forever in our boats won't scratch that surface.

So Pat you are saying those with boats with Cummins have made a terrible mistake?

I'd say go for it, Doug. It's a mature engine with proven reliability and excellent support.

I was refering to the marine engines, the Cummins truck engines are are beyond repute.

Your refering to all Cummins, I was not, just a year class and model.

Are you talking about the 12 valve Pat?

Is there something different about the engine itself between marine and truck?

Absolutly not! I an refering to the 1990's marine engines, the 250-270hp, with the phony intercooler that was nothing more than something to clean every 30 days.

Not talking about anything newer for marine use, words cannot explain the issues on that older version, including the mild steel coolant pipes attached to it. It is not possible to explain the issues my friend on the dock had with the poorly engineered model. The subject raises my hackles, sorry!

Different year class engines. I would like to add, another boater on my dock has newer 315 hp cummins B series, intercooler needs to be cleaned each season, the older versions had a different intercooler which doubled as a a heater for a warmer start, go figure.

The conversion for a road diesel engine can be converted to marine, some years ago there was a company selling a kit for this Cummins conversion, expensive by the time you add it all up, there are salvage companies that have Cummins-Perkins-Cat and a few others, brand new, all have the same problem, the cost of the conversion.

The newer engines are a far cry from the engines of 15 to 20 years ago, here is one example of new surplus diesel engines. Consider the newer Cummins as well as all newer engines, they are computer controlled. I thought of it once, untill I add up all the costs, and now, figuring out the computer end.

There was a company in Texas that had a conversion kit for the 6bt, but there web site does not come up (H and S Marine Services). I was going to convert one some years ago, parts cost priced me out.

Yes I did research it, not cost effective, I read somewhere that the marine pistons are different, do not for which model of 6BT.

Mesa marine has a lot of parts for the Cummins conversion.

Very long list 2001 and 2002 research, cannot find the company today, but good info.

                          READY TO REPOWER?

BEAT THE HIGH COST OF NEW DIESELS WITH A DODGE CUMMINS CONVERSION!

Diesel engines have many advantages as marine power plants, including longer life, better fuel economy, less maintenance, and higher reliability. Since diesel fuel has a higher flash point than gasoline, it is also a safer fuel to use. Most of the time, diesel fuel also offers considerable savings at the fuel pump.

If you canÔÇÖt justify the high cost of repowering with new diesels. By converting the truck engine to marine, with a Brazos Mfg Co marine conversion kit from H & H Distributors. Savings of 40 to 50% can be realized over the cost of a new diesel marine engine.

The Dodge Cummins 6BT series is an inline six cylinder diesel built rugged for serious hard work, and used worldwide in truck, marine and industrial applications. It is a low RPM, high torque, and very reliable engine. Even the 160 HP version produces over 400 ft. lbs of torque. This means your boat can turn a large propeller at slower engine speeds than with gas power for higher cruising speeds, better economy, longer engine life, and more power in heavy seas. In marine application, this engine will weigh approximately 1100 lbs.

Need something different than our standard kit? Our conversion kits can be used in keel cooled, dry exhaust, and other applications. We can supply necessary parts for many different applications. Could you use A raw water pump along with the one for the engine, for bait well etc ? Our raw water pump is mounted where the power steering pump mounts on side of engine, and is gear driven. If you need a second pump we can mount on front of engine. Tell us what you need, and we will price out kit to your specs.

Are you tired of paying high prices for marine parts? If any parts were ever needed, belts, hoses and engine parts can be found at your local discount part stores. Some other benefits of converting to our kits. Fuel less flammable, better fuel economy, more reliable, less maintenance, value of boat increases with diesel power, possible insurance rate reduction.

WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN A COST-EFFICIENT, LIGHT WEIGHT MARINE DIESEL?

The Dodge Cummins engines 1989-1997 will range from 160 HP to 215 HP in stock application. The 1989-1993 engines can be brought up to about 200/215 HP with adjustments to injector pump and after-cooler installed. If you need more than 215 HP,this can be achieved by reworking injector pump and replacing injectors.Or you can use the 1994-1997 engines with the Big Bosch injector pump, with 160 - 215 HP available from truck depending on year model. The HP can be increased. The 1998-2001 24 valve with 235HP out of truck, with more avaliable

When deciding what HP you would like to have, remember the more stock you leave the engine the best economy, performance, reliability you will receive. This relates to any engine, gas or diesel. We have kits that will increase the HP on the 1994-1997 engines to 180ÔÇö210ÔÇö230ÔÇö250 +. The 24 Valve engine can also be increased to over 250 HP . At 250 HP, we recommend an exhaust temperature pyrometer gauge kit. Under certain conditions such as, exhaust restriction, too much prop it is possible the exhaust temperature would rise too high, If this situation should happen, This kit would let you know so the throttle could be changed to drop temperature until problem was corrected. ( this potential problem relates to any diesel repower application, not just our application)

For customers wanting to use rubber isolator mounts instead of bolting engine solid, donÔÇÖt use just any rubber mounts. In our accessories we list front and rear engine mounts that were designed to carry the weight, engine torque, and prop thrust of these engines.

We are not in the engine business, but for customers who do not want to locate an engine, we will locate engine for customer then customer can purchase at our cost , customer will be sent copy of engine purchase invoice from supplier. We can also clean- paint engine, and install kit. We will run engine to check for fuel, oil, and water leaks and running condition.

For a small fee, it is possible we could deliver engines from Angleton, TX.

(We are located 50 miles South of Houston, TX)

                          COMING SOON

We have an adapter shaft that will connect to the Volvo Stern Drive, And we are working on other stern drive applications.

We can adapt to generators, water pumps, and industrial applications. Let us know what application you need. We will be glad to work with you on your particular application.

When I purchase an engine I am given a 30 day warranty, against any major defect in block, crank, rods, head, If I were to detect a major problem I would return to supplier. If I were to find a small problem we would work with customer to repair it.

I have 35 years experience in the repair of gasoline and diesel engines. I will check engines to the best of my ability. Being I am selling engines at my cost I can not give a warranty on engines other than what seller gives. On condition of engine, a lot can be judged on how quick it starts, how evenly it idles, any smoking condition, and oil pressure. If a person wanted a compression check we would provide for a small fee. I run engines up to operating temperature off and on for three days checking for oil or water leaks and running condition.

WARRANTY: The exhaust manifolds have a 1 year warranty. The water- cooled turbo housing has a 6 months warranty. The Sherwood raw water pump has 6 months (not worn impeller) . The Heat exchanger, After-cooler, water- cooled SS exhaust elbow, all brackets carry a one year warranty.

If you would like us to locate engine and install kit, a 10% deposit is required on the price of our kit and accessories. Being we are selling engine at our cost, customer will have to pay for engine up front. We will send customer copy of engine invoice from supplier, customer can make payment out to supplier or to us and we will pay supplier. If we cannot find a engine in 15 days, or if the price of engine is more than we normally pay for one we will refund deposit upon your request or keep looking for engine.

In info section we list items that need to be on an engine, if we find an engine that has any of these items missing. We will notify customer of cost to replace these items for their approval before engine is purchased.

On kit purchases a 10% deposit is required, balance due before shipment or we can send balance C.O.D.

                          Thanks

                            Interesting.

To compare, Kevin said he spent $25,000 for a gasser. Of course he was looking for performance but to compare prices, it looks like you could convert to a diesel for reasonable cost.

Often overlooked when costing out diesels is the money they will bring when you sell the boat. often close to the cost of the diesel in the first place.

Just trying to start a discussion and see where it goes.

Curious as to what makes this difference? Marine hp vrs, automotive? At the cost of two engines are we getting close buying a repo boat and parting it out? I think Keven got a new drive as well as an engine. When I re-powered my 2855 I got a 7.4 vortec and Brovo 3 drive installed for 13k, Motor and drive had 6 hrs. Super bargain compared to a 300hp outboard. I would think that there must be used marine Cummins engines out there much cheaper. Kevin re-powered with re-manufactured Cummins engines, anybody recall the cost each and what was included?
