A few years back, Boat US had an story about LED's and BUG's... If I remember it was saying that bugs don't come to the light that LED's give off.. Does anyone know this to be true?? If it's true.. I would change my dock light to LED's....
The only bugs that I know of that are not attracted by LED's are mosquito's. I usually get the little black buggers and moths and the ocasional "june" bug.
Most bugs cant see the color red. That being said, yellow lights are closer to red in the lighting spectrum so they dont attract as many bugs as you would with a full spectrum white light. If you think about a bug zapper it uses a blueish white light to attract. Another example would be street lights that use mercury vapor or blue white light bugs are pretty thick vs the high pressure sodium or yellow/orange light not so thick but still attract just not as many.
Every time I need to use the anchor light (LED) I wake up in the morning, break out the wash down and rinse the millions of bugs off my roof. Does that answer your question?
Cheers, Hans
