Gimbal pin-gctid368420

While I was cleaning my boat this spring I noticed one of the gimbal pins was missing on my 1988 OMC cobra drive... While talking with the mechanic who replaced it, he stated that the bushing was worn out. The boat is in the water now but I didn't see any bushing that could be worn out when I found the problem.... This gimbal pin is the allen head bolt the the drive pivots on in to the gimbal housing. Is there a bushing in this unit?????

I think you are referring to the pins labeled 26. The parts manual calls them pivot screws. It's a 1/2" allen screw. Part 84 is like a thin teflon washer. 85 is like a beefy washer that's inset into the housing. I hope you aren't missing #78. That's called an insert screw. It's kind of like a pushing but it's threaded. I'm not sure how you would replace that. It's part # 913412.Greg Attached files

That is the part #26 so there is a bushing kind of thing it the housing. I will take a look in the fall when the boat comes out to see what I have to do to replace it....

      Thanks,

I think that inset screw is a heli coil. I remember reading in the manual not to run a tap through the screw holes on the gimbal housing as some of them are heli coils. I've never done a heli coil before. I think it will involve removing the pivot housing (2 1/2" allen screws), detaching the lower shift cable, gimbal and exhaust bellows and water tube. You'll need to due this to get the pivot housing off. Then you can put it in a vise. It's not too big of a job to get to that point. If I can offer any advice, let me know. I've been working on gimbal housing for the last 2 weeks and have a pretty good idea of what's involved.

Now I am wondering if the bushing the mechanic was talking about was part #84 85. I will have to ask him for clarification on what he is talking about..... Thanks for the info

I can't imagine it's 85. It's just a big fat washer. I've taken 3 apart one that was completely abused and those washers were perfect. The teflon discs could be worn but they are cheap. Like $2 each. One of the gimbals that i took apart did look a little rough in that heli core area. It looked kind of cross threaded.

              Good luck,

Those pins dont just fall out. That is a bushing that is in the gimbal house. There are threads in the gimbal ring that are probably gone. If it had a heli coil in it someone has had the gimbal ring out before.
