Brand new to the Bayliner family with a question-gctid361323

Hello all. I just purchased a 1994 Capri 1850 ss. It has the 4.3 Mercruiser with the Alpha 1 out drive. The boat is in really good shape except for the prop. It is a little chewed up. I was going to put a new one on and have looked all over the site and net and can't find what the original prop was. There are no numbers to be read on the prop itself. Any help would be great.

    Thanks for your help

welcome to the zoo....take the prop off and to a local prop shop...they can do both ..repair and tell you what prop you have...there is a bunch of numbers on the ctr hub that should tell you what the size of the prop is....

The most common prop that came from the factory is a 14.5 x 17.

Many prop shops will allow you to test a prop on your boat for X days and exchange it if it does not give you the desired effect. At the same time have them look at the current prop, they can tell you what it is and can repair it to have as a back up, which it is always a good idea to carry a spare.

I would suggest you first take the boat out for a run to see how it does. Who says it is the best prop for your boat in the first place? Certainly not because that's what came with the boat! How will you be using the boat? If you will be pulling skiers, a different prop is needed then just jetting around. Two props are certainly a good idea. maybe one for go fast and the other for skiing or when l loaded. Trust me, there is definitely a difference! Take family or/friends with you like you will commonly run the boat. How does it do getting up on plane? Record the maximum rpm you can get at full throttle. Now take the prop and this information to your prop shop and they will be able to get the best prop for you.

Try an aluminum 3 blade 21 pitch and see what rpm you get out of it and report back to us.

That's what I had on my boat, would turn 4800rpm and 48mph.
