What is this flap for, do I need it and where do I get it. (other than Ebay).. The port side one is gone..Would this have anything to do with what happened to the engine? It is on the opposite side of the damage though.
Exhaust flapper. It prevents water from backing up through the exhaust and into the engine. I don't know what's wrong with your engine so I can't answer the question. If something happened that is related to water ingestion, quite possibly. You get the replacement through any normal marine engine parts source; dealers/shops or online.
