    W06D serpentine belt/alternator upgrade.-gctid359413

    Hi there.

    I'll be right upfront. I don't own a Bayliner. I hope you don't mind me seeking information on these forums.

    I'm from Auckland, New Zealand and I do own a Salthouse Coastal 35 semi-displacement launch powered by a 250hp Hino W06D. And my question relates to this engine.

    I've just replaced the house batteries on this boat and this has got me looking carefully at my charging requirements while cruising.

    The first project I want to do is get the alternator spinning faster. Because my boat is semi-displacement I am generally cruising around 1500 rpm. Alternator spec says maximum output is at 4000 rpm. With 1 to 2 pulley ratio this means alternator is spinning at only 3000 rpm at normal cruising. The alternator pulley is minimum diameter I think for the v belts so just changing to a smaller alternator pulley is not an option. So I think I need to upgrage to a grooved serpentine style belt with appropriate pulleys. Alternator and water pump pulleys look easy to source but the cranshaft pulley I don't think so.

    Has anyone done this? Is there a kit available as I have found for other brands of engine? Or can suitable pulleys be sourced from somewhere? I can provide more information if required.

    After getting the alternator speed right I will then look at external advanced regulators or chargers as made by Sterling Power or Balmar etc. There look to be several options for this part.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Any ideas here? Has anyone fitted a smaller diameter pulley to the alternator? Is so what did you use. I've been searching extensively online but can't find anything suitable. What about the crank pulley? Is that the same as another engine? Any ideas appreciated.

      Just checking back again to see if anyone can help me with this upgrade I want to do.

      On my Hino W06D-T I want to change the alternator drive belts and pulleys to a grooved belt and change the ratio for the alternator so I get full alternator output at lower engine revs. Has anyone done something like this? What did you use. My engine has a large heavy crank pulley with 3 v belt grooves of which only the inner 2 are used.

      In googling around I see kits available to do exactly this for some other brands of engine but nothing for the Hino. I know I could pull the pulleys off and probably get something machined up to do the job but I was hoping to buy suitable pulleys off the shelf.

      Any help appreciated.

        You could instal an double idler pulley with a 1 to 1.5 ratio to drive the alternator.

            A good suggestion above.

            And you can also contact a good local electrical shop and/or Balmar/Sterling direct for their options on installing or changing the existing alternator for higher outputs at lower speeds. I know a number of folks in this area who have good results by either 1.utilizing a new alternator or 2.having an existing alternator rebuilt to new specs for their application.

            But I am unaware of anyone who has put a serpentine belt on the WO6 marine series engines

              Because we also cruise at a low rpm, we had the same problem. Our solution was to mount a double groove pulley on the engine ( we have the 4 cylinder WO-4's, your 250 probably already has the double grooved pulley) and used a 160 & 270 amp Leece Neville alternators with a J-180 mount. This way we are able to get more amps at lower RPM's.

              One more suggestion is to post this in the Motor Yacht section because many of us with Hino's rarely visit any other section.
