    Hi Everyone,

    This database is for Cummins engine information: part numbers, interchange part numbers, specifications, detailed procedures, etc. Please do not post questions or issues specific to your boat. It's OK to post feedback on data that should be included here. Keep in mind, that once someone posts the data, your feedback post may be deleted to keep the database clean. Thanks in advance.

      On most of our boats it is hard to access the fuel filter on the port engine and the oil filter on the starboard engine. To simplify servicing the filters can be relocated toward the center line of the boat. Cummins makes the parts necessary to relocate both filters, but many Cummins parts providers do not know what to look for. Seaboard Marine (sbmar.com) is familiar with filter relocation and can provide kits with all the parts and hoses needed.

      Here is a photo of the Oil filter relocation kit installed on a 4BTA engine. The 6BTA installation is the same:

        All Cummins 6-series marine engines have a one zinc in the heat exchanger. Raw water after-cooled engines have two zincs in the aftercooler.

        Zinc model number: E2

        Zinc size: 1/2" NPT thread, 5/8" pencil zinc

              The LF 3894 is an upgrade to cheaper cellulose or glass fibre filters under a proprietary name StrataPore, which is a finer, lower micron filter.

                  #1 Cummins OEM Sherwood 1730 Seawater Pumps

                  One of the Sherwood pumps on my 4788 is leaking at the shaft seal, so rather than blindly purchasing a new Seamax SMX1730 as many have recommended on this and other forums I decided to do some research. I had a lengthy conversation with a technical service rep at Penaire, the company who owns Sherwood pumps and he provided the following history.
                  Starting in the 1990's Sherwood 1730's were standard equipment on many Caterpillar and Cummins marine engine packages. Eventually Sherwood recieved feedback that there were problems with bearing and seal reliability as well as occaisional housing casting issues. They told Cat and Cummins about this and informed them that improvements would be made. Both companys said " The pumps are lasting past the warranty period, dont't improve them, we want to sell parts. Since they were the major consumers of these pumps nothing changed untill around 2006 when Sherwood upgraded the pumps anyway with better castings and shaft as well as bearings that were pressed on instead of being secured with snap rings and they also upgraded the mechanical seals. Since then reliablity has significantly improved.
                  I was a Service Rep for a major machinery manufacturer for over 30 years and I have experienced first hand what this gentleman told me.
                  These improvements made the stock Sherwood pumps essentialy identical to the Seamax SMX1730 which eveyone loves with one important difference.
                  I can purchase Sherwood 1730C pumps online for $486.00 at places like Marine Pump Direct whereas the Seamax SMX 1730 is $750.00 ... a $264.00 difference.
                  I'm going to purchase a new Sherwood and buy 100 gallons of diesel with the money I saved.
                  On second thought... I will dismantle my pump and if the bearings are retained by snap rings I'll purchase a new pump.
                  If the bearings are pressed on I'll buy bearings, seals and an impeller kit and save a few hundred dollars more.

                    I changed to Seamax. One started leaking at 350 hours and got re-built. Now it has started weeping at 600 hours later. Waste of money changing to Seamax compared to simply rebuilding the Sherwoods.

                  HOW TO TEST YOUR GAUGES AND SENDERS
                  All you need is a multimeter and this document to determine if your gauge or sender is faulty.
                  Please remember that if you have two helm stations your pressure and temperature senders are different from those with only one helm station.
                  Norton Rider included the part numbers in a previous post in this Cummins database thread
                  All the gauges will function correctly with single or multiple stations

                    Oil Pan Drain Plug
                    If you change the Walker Air Seps On the Cummins 6B engines to the Seaboard Marine EnviroVent CCV, the kit includes a 1/4" plug to cap off the old check valve. But, if you want to remove the unused Walker hose fitting, old drain hose, and check valve and then plug the drain at the oil pan you can use a 9/16"-18 ORB ("O" Ring Boss) straight thread plug available from hydraulic suppliers for about $2.

                      Does anyone have the cross ref or dimensions for aftercooler o-rings? I have mine apart but the o-rings have taken a set to make it hard to get an exact dimension of the diameter of cord.

                      I am all for making a buck but similar sizes are about $1/ea through mcmaster (total of $4) v. $80 at Seaboard seems a bit unreasonable.

                          • The Cummins 330 After coolers use either of 2 sizes of O-rings: "thick" and "thin". Whether thick or thin can be determined by looking at the bore on the cap - if the chamfer extends to the bolt hole, use the thick O-ring; if the chamfer stops about .070" from the bolt hole, use the thin O-ring.

                            The thick O-ring is size -353, 4.975" ID, .210" thick, nominal 5" ID x 3/16" cross section
                            The thin O-ring is size -250, 4.984" ID, .139" thick, nominal 5" ID x 1/8" cross section

                          I removed my intercoolers to service them and went to my local Cummins dealership to purchase 4 of # 4019975 O Ring seals
                          Their cost was $42.60 each or $170.40 CAD plus tax for four of them.
                          After picking myself up from the floor I went to a local business that specializes in seals and O Rings and purchased the exact same item for $9.69 each or $38.76 CAD
                          Description is 4.875 x .210 VITON 75 DURO O-Ring (BLACK)
                          I saved $130 and supported a local business as well

                              The FF5285 is a 20micron filter.
                              Most want to have a lower micron rating on engine stepping down to 10 or even 2.
