The pros, including the manufacturer, use refined mineral spirits which is less viscose than mineral oil. The theory is oil will retard the needle movement. I bought refined mineral spirits from a local compass repair shop but West Marine sells it. As earlier indicated, Home Depot type mineral spirits is not "refined" and not recommended.

I used mineral oil that you can buy at any pharmacy and most grocery stores as well. Here's the compass showing the fill port. The plug is a phillips screw.Filled oil with:

I refilled mine and it did not leak out. Worth a try. The gasket (bellows) can be rebuilt if leaking is an issue. Don't use Home depot mineral spirits. The West Marine stuff is "refined" and apparently quite different from the stuff used to clean a paint brush. Finally, if it requires rebuilding and you do not want to do it there are re-builders scattered about. Just Google marine compass rebuild. Here's one example: http://www.vikingcompass.com/compassrepair1.html

You can't find one for a reasonable price. I ended up replacing mine with a Ritchie and had to fabricate a base to accept the smaller diameter. If you have an original Danforth don't bother refilling it with minerial oil because it will eventually leak out.

There is a filler on the underside. West Marine has the fluid. It is mineral spirits, not mineral oil.

Does anyone where to get a compass that fits the helm of

    a 1990 4588 Bayliner ( diameter 6 1/4 inch. ) or how to

replace the oil in this one that has completely dried up?

The only info on the make of it is " Riviera Genova" . Jk.
