Want to put in new carpet in a 1999 4788-gctid348322

Despite all my best effort, normal wear and tear, a few spilled adult beverages, and a whole bunch of teenage traffic, has finally taken its toll on the factory carpet.

I'm sure a few of you have replaced it. Any tips as to type of replacement, and suggestions as to who? (Puget Sound Area)

Is there any sound advantage with a heavier pad?

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

Hi: We have a 1988/45 and the previous owner removed the carpet everywhere except the V berth and replaced it with Teak & Holly wood. It looks wonderful. Is easy to take care of and you don't worry about anybody spilling stuff on it. We have dogs and grandchildren running around. You can get the Teak & Holly in 1/4 inch so it doesn't add too much weight or bulk. I know they had a carpenter do it as the engine hatchs need trim and extra cuts. You could look at a sailboat as most of them have it. Hope this helps. Pam

Just had new carpet and corian counters put in our 1991 4588 in Seattle. Labor and carpet was about $2700. Counters were about $3,000. They did a great job.

Pam brings up a good idea with the teak and holly replacement and that brings up a good question I have been meaning to ask since I joined here!

I have teak and holly floors throughout the boat(4550) but I dont think I have ever seen one with T&H? I mean from the 80's , 4550 or 4588.

The PO said that it was a 30 or 35k option when the boat was new.

I know a lot of you guys I have talked to have seen or sold many of these 4550's or 4588's and I was just wondering, have you seen any with T&H? It seems like

it was a rare option. Any thoughts? I love the wood floors vs carpet. just easy to keep clean.

        thanks

          Hello Ed,

We have been on at least 40 of these boats over the past 20 years and I can say that this was not a stock choice. Perhaps something that a dealer or a previous onwer installed at one point in time.

          Hope this helps

I did the carpet on my 95 4788 last year. Got a heck of a buy on the carpet (surplus fromwhat they put in 5788 - bought a complete roll) Got a good deal on pad and had a good installer. The Pad is the same as used in Christensen yachts (not the typical Home Depot stuff) and the guy I had do the install use to work at Bayliner so he know all of the tricks.

If you want his name send me a PM and I will get you his number.

It sure changed the boat! I added hatches in the center and on the port side now engine access it GREAT!

We came across an ex-Arlington upholstery shop person last year, who re-installed a saggy piece of headliner in our 490. He can not operate in Canada, but we arranged to meet him in in Anacortes, where he arrived exactly on time, and did the job at less than the originally quoted cost. He also checked and tightened all of the headliners throughout the boat.

His name is Bob Hinds, and despite searching high and low at home for his business card I can't find his number, but I will be at the boat in the next day or so and will post the information here as soon as I get it. I believe he bases himself out of Marysville WA.

Bob handles all thing 'Interior' on Bayliners and Meridians. We discussed installing a removable hatch between the engines, but on his suggestion, we are waiting until either later this year or early next year to get some use from the existing carpet which was installed new by the original owner just before we purchased the boat. I have no idea (or even care) who did that job, but it was somewhere in Vancouver. He also handles wallpaper and fabric replacement, and was very price competitive on the forward stateromm conversion.

I'll post here again ASAP when I get the information.

The original bid for our 4588 by a local canvas shop was $3000. That didn't sound to bad until we got the details and it was $3K just for labor, the carpet was extra so we started shopping. I don't guess even that was too bad because another guy in the marina near us paid about $23K for his carpet job in a boat that was a little bigger than ours but not that BIG. I f you want details just ask and I'll send a personal message.

Those of you that put in T & H, I'm curious what it did to engine noise. It seems like it might amplify it since it is a solid material that would transmit the engine room noise more than say and thick pad and carpet.

Nelie59, what made the pad you bought better? Was it thicker or made of a different material?

                      Thanks

We used a foam pad that had a film on it on both sides or an Anti-Microbial solution for a pad:

Froth Urethane Carpet Pad is the best all around pad in the world. This carpet pad is the only carpet pad of its kind to make use of Sunflower Oil, which means it is environmentally sound. Froth Urethane Pad is one of the only carpet pads that reduce the spread of bacteria. This carpet pad can be installed to prevent, or even eliminate, subfloor moisture buildup.

The Faom w/film on each side is more expensive - From Dalton Carpet the Durabond pad is about 18 cents a foot and the Urathane Carpet pad is about 89 cents a foot - BUT it is worth it!!!!

The film on each side of the pad is good for the glue and it is a great bearier for any water that gets on the carpet or form the underneath of the carpet.

We took out the salon sette when we did the carpet and did allot of blocking of holes for where the wind would blow through in to the salon.

Thanks Smitty for the reply, just got back from a nice trip to sarasota and i coulnt hook up from my I-pad.

Thats interesting that you think it was not an option from the factory, maybe your right, but i looked around at the steps and the engine doors.

It seems like the subflooring is all original and the T&H is continuous into the galley. No seam where they would have added more wood flooring. It's also an exact match with the flooring in the master stateroom. The flooring goes under the cabinets too in the galley!

I think i'm right in thinking that the other 4550's and 4588's that have carpet, still have the T&H in the galley? Or am I?

I just dont see where it looks like its been added?!

                          Hmm...
