what ever size one wants to.... as long as the bracket can support the weight.
sizing of a kicker is more importantly determined by its primary usage than it by the size of boat that its going on. what are you going to use the kicker for? trolling or as a back up motor in the event your main should fail you when crossing the bar?.....

I had a 1989 2858. It had a swimstep mounted kicker bracket. I mounted my dinghy's 8 HP Yamaha 2-stroke on it to see how it worked and found out that it was virtually useless: 2-3 knots at full throttle. Moreover, the outboard had a short shaft and the swimstep was too high; so the prop keep ventilating. Based on my experience I would recommend a 15 HP, high thrust motor.1999 3788, Cummins 270 "Freedom"

15hp long leg or extra long leg merc pro. On my 2859. Use the right bracket capable of carrying the extra weight of a 4 stroke. The 15hp merc pro with the extra long leg is about 140pds. The garelick bracket i have is good to 175pds. I put a 1/4" one piece aluminum plate on the inside of the transom to bolt through.Doug
