96(39) 3587 water leak, stain in front vberth-gctid826366

Hi there,

Had our pre purchase survey today on a 96' 3587. In the front vberth there are water stains on the fuzzy hull covering at the shelf contour (which is about a foot from the ceiling) where it meets the berth entry wall. The dealer invited us to spend a couple days aboard which is great! Got some rain this afternoon and felt some dampness there. It looks to me like the affected area is approximately below where the winshield meets the deck at the roof support pillar. Hoping for possible explanations, suggestions, insights etc. Really need to get to the bottom of this issue.

I had a 3587 never suffered with this problem. however if I remember there was discussion on the forum here about water leaks from the windshield. suggest doing some searching for 4087 or 3587 (same boat in that place) and water leaks I think you'll find something.

as a dumb obvious one, make sure the porthole windows are locked down nice and tight too.

Check the portlight seal near the leak. The rub rail where the deck joins the hull can be source of dampness. Re-siliconing from the outside might help. Would check the hatch seal, it may be seaping in snakeing its way over to the damp spot. Only other place it might be is the mount for the small hand rail on the deck by the hatch.

our 4087 had leaks in the vee berth and forward head during a rain or water splashing over the hull.

I sealed the entire perimeter of the windscreen frame to the hull, and between the frames either side of the centre window, the leak has been resolved.

Thanks. When we sealed the frame perimeter to the hull, most of the leak was stopped. The final resolution was to seal the gap between the frames either side of the centre windscreen. The gap was quite minimal and difficult to see.

Its surprising how much volume will pass thru a very small opening. The dealer said they will replace the stained wall covering (monkey fur) also. I am somewhat tempted to tackle this myself. So many times I have said if you want it done right do it yourself.

Ask for a credit if you take it without the leak being fixed if your going to do it yourself.
