Port Hurth HBW 360a transmission slipping at or just above 3800 rpm. Engine begins to race. Repairable, rebuildable or call the undertaker?

Sounds like a rebuild situation if parts available. ZF took over Hurth many years ago. My boat has a Hurth 630A on one side and ZF 63A on the other due to a complete replacement. Whatever you do (replace or rebuild) - change out your Damper plate with new.

I was told by a 3870 owner that the common failure is the forward thrust bearing. For this reason many owners remove both transmissions and switch them from side to side. This puts the forward load on the other thrust bearing. Before doing this I would verify if this is accurate with a trans mechanic.

Don't let it slip too much because the plates warp and then the transmission will not come out of gear.

Get fixed soon. Like above running too long will damage parts that are no longer available.
