You really want the centerline of the transmission output shaft and the propeller shaft to be in the straightest line possible. IMO, it would be worth having a shipwright with the laser alignment setup to work through the process with you.

It may or may not need to be shimmer. If it was previously was.most likely need to. Things move and change you won't know until you do a preliminary fit. Some shims are flat some are slanted.
