    Hurth 360 Transmissions-gctid824396

Does anyone know a good source for reconditioned or new 1986 3270 Hurth 360 transmissions. Preferably in Canada, but probably unlikely. Just checking for a fellow boater. Not sure what the difference is between 360 and 360a. Is there a re-build kit for these? Any pointers would be appreciated.

The "a" is for down angle. You can still get the typical wear items like the thrush washers, but any of the major parts are obsolete. A good source is Mike @North Harbor Marine/Diesel

When I did the math, a new ZF-630A was about $50 more than the cost to rebuild a Hurth 360A. I swapped both of my 360's to new ZF-630's after one of my 360's let go due to a bad thrust washer. The 630's are a bit shorter , but they fit nicely.

Make sure you replace the drive plates when the gears are off - I bought R&D polymer ones which work great, but the 630's sound like a couple buckets full of marbles when idling - not much you can do about it...

I have a rebuilt 360a 1.65:1 ratio that came out of my Dad's 1988 3218. We had it rebuilt before going with a total repower, transmissions and all. It's been sitting here since.

I am just out of Vancouver (Langley, BC) if that helps.

LCexplorer. I have a buddy just bought a 32 with a slipping 360a. I'm not sure of the ratio but will look this weekend. Who did you have rebuild yours? What is your price? I am in Kelowna so if the deal is right I'm sure he'll take it. Text me if you like 250-212-3586.

Nikko and anyone else with the bucket of marbles......you don't have to live with that racket!!!! When I bought my 32 it drove me nuts! I changed the drive plates. Installed the R&D plates first but they were worse than the old plates. Advise from fellow boc members and talking to Mike (the transmission guy at harbor marine) changed to centa flex plates.....they are beautiful. Quiet and shifts with no cluck rattles etc.

See Nikko comment above: the experts in the Seattle/Everett area would be Harbor Marine in Everett. Highly recommended. Note the Nikko comment about replacing the drive plate also, particularly if anyone else has a commins engine.

I don't know if it helps, but a PO of my boat decided to replace the Hurths with ZF-63a transmissions instead of rebuilding the originals. They look like a drop in.

I did some research in the last week on this as well. Several years ago when I asked Harbor Marine the cost of rebuild, it was $900-1200, now it's $2000 citing increased parts prices. I saw the company below referenced for parts, and contacted them on pricing. The kit near the bottom titled 'Clutch & Seal Kit (Includes Thrust Washers)' was $1045. Other prices provided from the page for your reference....

                Forward thrust washer $164

                Reverse thrust washer $58

                Paper clutch disc $93 ea

                Steel clutch disc $66 ea

And as you say, the upgrade to a new transmission is only $2200. FYI- When I asked Harbor Marine about any shaft length issues, Mike stated 'The 630's are shorter by .787" so we use a drivesaver that is 1.00" thick.' for cost of $560 for the pair. The only negative appears me is the increased parasitic power losses of the upgraded transmission as noted by others on the forum. For what it's worth, Dean

Did you replace the 360a with ZF-630 in a 32 or 38? Just wondering how much longer the 630 are compared to 360. In my 3270 I only have 11/4 inches of bare shaft between the coupling and the packing box nut. That's barely enough room to re-pack it. I do not have any drive plates- no space for them.

The drive plates are attached to the flywheel. They are what the splined shaft fits into.
