  • Rattling noise at startup/low RPM on starboard engine of a 3288-gctid822106

    Hello,

Just found the forum! I've currently got an offer on a '89 3288 and had a compression test (all good), survey (all good here generally too) and on the water test we noticed a rattling on the starboard engine (not diesel) at startup and low RPMs. One potential diagnosis was in the transmission (admittedly engines are not my strong suit) but we weren't sure. Another mechanic said he has heard similar in other boats but that there isn't a need to fix it nor is there a wear issue. We've got it as a contingency on the sale but I'm expecting push back from the current owner.

That all said (and I realize this is a very general question) wanted to see if there was any common experiences with something similar with other owners out there.

    Thanks!

Did you have a survey done on the boat? You most likely have a Hurth 360a transmission. Parts can be a bugger to find and rebuilds aren't cheap providing the parts are available.. I have a 88 3218 which is the same boat with no rattles or chatter during start up. I'd ask the mechanic or owner to dig a little deeper. It could even be the bearings in a worn out alternator.

Engine shouldn't rattle when it's in neutral. V8's?

I have the same issue...low RPM rattle with the SB, and not the Port side. My transmission tech friend says rattle is from the squared teeth and of no consequence. Some rattle and some don't. Rattle goes away at about 900 RPM. Hope he's right, but has been three years and not an issue.

if you have 360a trannys then it is the flex plate in the tran witch spins any time the eng is running.

my right one rattles more than the port, both are rebuilt and have the upgraded flex plates, still rattle,

            don't be to concerned.

It's the flex plate springs. Not a problem. Just change the flex plate next time transmission is rebuilt. Harbor Marine in Everett has lots of wear parts for the 360.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Another issue on the flybridge steering has come up (hyraulics on steering needs to be rebuilt) so we're working through that first. I appreciate all of the feedback. I haven't gotten the full survey back yet so with additional details perhaps I can post more.

We're still considering it given its st the right price knowing there will need to be investment (gotten some good insights here on that too).

St. Crook river near Afton. Well, we will be if we still buy the boat. The price is good enough (and general survey feedback positive enough) that we're still considering it recognizing that it will need some investment too. Thanks for the insights

St. Croix River near Hudson. Or we will be if we still buy it.

I am in Afton. If you decide to buy, good luck with your purchase. We enjoy our 3218 very much.

Damper plate springs a little weak. Nothing to worry about. Very common in the gas powered 32s.

Mine's been doing it from day one, at idle only. Change fluid often.
