I just had a rebuilt 5.9 Cummins 270hp installed and when you start it, it smokes , is this a common thing until it is broken it?

It has been my experience that Diesel engines smoke initially upon starting but should clean up after they get warm. That can take a minute or so. Certainly give it some time to break in. Was the fuel injection system rebuilt including injectors?

Every Cummins marine diesel I've ever had smoked on startup
This should clear up as the engine warms up.
Hopefully you were briefed on how to break in a Cummins engine.
If not, its simple. Run the engine hard. Dont idle the engine, get after it when underway.

Water entered the starboard engine last winter from a sea surge.We are doing a sea trial Tues and I will post pictures later.
