Got one. My son is driving it up from Seattle to PT.

    Nightmare.

Coming out of the locks in Seattle day one of the 2 week trip and my ignition key is spinning in the barrel. Won't catch the starter. Then luckily it catches and starts.

Somehow it mush have stayed engaged as I discovered he next morning it was dead.

So Port Townsend for 3 days now and hoping to get it replaced today.

    Nightmare.

Obviously must fix the key switch before anything else, ,are you sure it was the key switch?.....

If you are really stuck to get home I have been successful with this trick twice on Sea Rays if you have good access to the starter on one engine and can get home in one leg.

      - I had them start the easy to access engine / then tape over the shutdown switch

      - Left it running and disconnected that engine battery to starter

      - Carefully pull the starter with engine running

      - Put the good starter in the other engine so he could start it and get home

      Worked for us at least....

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the whole switch body spinning in the dash. Tightening the nut did not solve the problem. I went to a fastener supply house and bought large star-type lock washers that fit around the threaded switch body. I removed the switches and put the lock washers on. Then I reinstalled the switches with the lock washers captive between the switches and the back of the dash. This prevented the switch bodies from rotating - problem solved.

          Simbad,

I'm just curious how you troubleshot the starter was bad when you also obviously have an ignition switch issue. There must be more to this story. Whatever the issue, I hope it's easily resolved!

Picking up on what Smitty said: after you get the good engine started, 'zip tie' the fuel solenoid in the running position. This will prevent the engine from shutting down, regardless of the key position. The starter could then be moved to the other engine (no easy job) to enable starting of the second engine. Again, if something is compromised with your ignition system, tying the fuel solenoid in the running position and energizing the starter will start the engine every time. You will need to release the fuel solenoid to shut the engine down. Been there done that on several boats.
