Westerbeke 8.0kw diesel generator engine oil?-gctid816325

I have been using Shell Rotella 15/40 in my 1986 Westerbeke.

Talked the other day with a old time mechanic who rebuilds these old engines and he says my engine will be much happier using a

Single 30 weight oil instead.....and I should be shot for using a multi weight oil.

What oil do you folks use in your old Westerbeke's and why?

BTW....I use the Shell 15/40 in my Hinos as well

I'm no mechanic, but was told to use straight 30W non-synthetic in both my main Cummins diesels and the Westerbeke genset. However, if you go out searching the internet you will find that it is a hotly debated topic. 30W is the recommended oil for my Cummins, so it just became my go-to oil for the Westerbeke as well. I'll leave the debate to those more mechanical here on the forum.

All I can say is my Generator sure runs and sounds better using the single weight, I was told the same thing by the way .

I will say my mains run quieter running 30W. I noticed a big difference after my first oil change to using non-synthetic 30W. Even the Admiral commented on it being quieter when underway.
