    Genny putting out 330 volts?-gctid815985

Our mechanic, not an electrician , diagnosed my generator by saying that it was putting out 330 V. I was able to speak to the generator expert today and he told me that that usually means it has bad wiring, and that the generator must be pulled and completely rewired (recoiled) and is almost always due to a water leak. The price quote was astronomical. He said that it is usually covered by insurance .

This is all news to me and I am looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience and/or a much simpler problem solve.

    Thanks in advance .

I have a an 8kw and haven't had your problem

but i would suggest you call Marine Parts in Nanaimo

for a second opinion.(250-754-5471 ) I think they are the go to

      Westerbeke folks locally.

PS I think you passed me on July 1st in the Creek. I was on the hook

in front of Mahoney and Sons .Had a blue paddleboard on either side of the bow

Joe, rather than rewiring, have you explored a swap out replacement alternator back end? There was a joint, Breward? Electrics in Florida that used to exchange them. For a 12.5kva, if I remember, they ran at around US$3k+.

The Westerbeke back end is a nightmare of a rewiring job. I had a friend down here gave their's to a shop who thought it would be easy. Getting info from Westerbeke was fruitless (they literally would not provide any repair support). I think they found a guy in Europe that helped, but it was not easy and there was some variation in current etc with the end result which was partially fixed with a reduction in run speed. At least there is a warranty with a bolt on change out unit.

Good luck with the insurance claim. Unless it was part of s bigger "flooding event", the insurance companies down here would tell you to take a running jump!!!

        Good luck with it. Cheers

Thanks John. I will call them as well.

The genny guy here says insurance so I'm going to hope for that in second place. First place is something less and easy.
