AC/ DC Functionality - Converter-gctid814692

Hi - Im new to this forum and new to being a boat owner so thanks to everyone for participating here.

I have a 3988 and am wondering if i am docked and hooked up to the dock AC, will my converter charge my DC batteries? Can i leave my DC on while i'm docked and plugged into the AC?

Your 3988 will probably have a dedicated charger or an inverter-charger for the house batteries. Usually the inverter-chargers are set p so they charge automatically when shore power is connected. If a dedicated charger, you may need to turn the battery charger circuit breaker on. Once the batteries are charging there's no harm in having the DC breakers on.

Since the boat is new to you and you are a new boat owner, I recommend that you get a person experienced with systems on this size of boat to give you a thorough walk through of all the systems and their operation.

If by converter you mean inverter/charger, then yes, batteries charged when hooked to shore power automatically. A control panel should allow you to change the rate of charge. When hooked for a day or more to shore power, select lower max chg. When using gen set use max chg rate.

Why lower charge rate when on shore power?

When on shore power we are managing our current draw to be below 30 amps. A 100 amp inverter chg could use up a third of that. Things like cooking, hot water tank, freezers(2), electric heaters when needed, etc.
