Buying a 1994 4388 and looking for information, good and bad.-gctid811654

    Hi

I have an accepted offer on a 1994 4388. Per the owners it was special ordered with the 310 Turbo Hino's. The Shafts where increased to 2" and it has heavier duty transmissions. The owners have taken excellent care of her but there are always problems inherent in each model and year. I'm looking for advice on what to look for. At this time my primary concern is a little delamination between the windshield and the forward stateroom hatches. Surveyor says it's not an emergency but should be repaired to prevent spreading. He recommending that the skin be lifted in lieu of injecting epoxy??

    Hello and welcome....

"I have an accepted offer on a 1994 4388. Per the owners it was special ordered with the 310 Turbo Hino's. The Shafts where increased to 2" and it has heavier duty transmissions"

    - Are the trans Hurth 800 series?

    - Are both trans ratios the same in "A" and "B"?

    - Can the engines reach WOT +3-5% when fully loaded as a brief test (3.090-3,150)?

It appears you have a survey already so I am guessing you are not looking for detailed mechanical lists of what to look for at this time.

    Hope this helps

send me your email in a PM and I will send you my boat buying check list. Did you have a mechanical survey done? Sea trials?

4388 is a nice looking boat Cap Jack.

310 turbo intercooled Hino got a 800 series Hurth with 2" shaft.

They automatically upped the shafts and transmissions with the increased horsepower. Smitty asked if the two transmissions are the same ratio. I know on my 32 of that year there was a difference in the ratios, so I am unclear why the question about ratios. Smitty?

Because the OP stated that they were 'upgraded' and a 'special ordered' I become very careful.

I am aware of a few boats which were 'upgraded' at the dealer and not the factory in various ways.

I have learned the hard way that once those words are mentions to ask all details and not take anything for granted.

I seem to remember, but am not sure, that the 4388 transom door was very close to the side of the boat and know of one that had a failure there. most later day builds moved the door further inboard so there was a 90 degree angle of support.

I've copied some of the specs below. They are from the current owner.

I did a sea trail and was dissapointed to see the WOT RPM at 2875 and 2884 ( digital tachs) instead of the 3k it is supposed to be. The sellers said that it has always been at that speed having never hit 3k before. The current owners have been involved with the boat since it was new. Prop specs are below. Could she be over proped? the boat was light at the time of the sea trial. 5 people but no gear.

The cooling system has been gone through with the heat exchanger cores replaced in recent years as well as the elbows.

Anyone know how often the HINO elbows need to be replaced? The are cast iron per the sellers.

did you have delamination on your boat? if so was it necessary to fix or considered ok to leave?

I'm hearing that the skin needs to be lifted rather than injecting epoxy because the foam core is too soft to allow for epoxy injection to work.

If the tachs are accurate that is not a good sign for long engine life. Hard to say if it is over-propped without trans ratios and a prop scan and a good feeling for engine sate of tune. While that would be one of my first guess's there is no need to guess when you have the trans ratios, prop scans and engine condition. Did you happen to get the high idle numbers as well? (that is the WOT rpm carefully checked while in neutral).

IN salt water use with typical hours each season (like 80) I have seen them last between 8 and 12 years. If it were my boat and they were new I would begin to take one off for inspection each year beginning at year 7 and alternate each season until/unless they failed inspection.

Is this a spec from a handbook? Or from a stamp on the props? Or from a scan report?

No but looked at 4 other that had this problem. I avoided any boats with soft spots another area to ck is around the rudders this is a place were most 43.88 get soft. I typ run at 9 knots at 1800 rpm this is my best fuel. 6.5 gal hr. pushing her at 2600 I can get her up to 18 knots but she becomes a wallet melter. spec says 24 mph but that must be a totally empty boat. Were the manny coolers replaced or ceramic coated? elbows should last a long time. exhaust cans are around $1300 ea. I have the 250 hinos.

I'll have to ask if the coolers were ceramic coated. haven't heard of this being done before. is it a good thing to do?

This boat has the 310's. about 4.5 gallons an hour at 9knts. Pushed her to 18 knots and was burning 25+ gallons. The boat has digital fuel flow meters.

The survey is on Monday. Hoping that nothing really bad is found as fishing season is here.

didn't do a no load check on wot. that always scares me. funny I'm ok doing it with a load for a few seconds but not in neutral.

the proper specs came from the owners. I'll ask where they got them.

Fuel flow gages are great to have are you confident they are accurate?

Do you have the furl flow readings at WOT in gear both port and stb?

Do you have EGT or boost readings?

"didn't do a no load check on wot. that always scares me. funny I'm ok doing it with a load for a few seconds but not in neutral."

Please know the time to worry is when they are loaded and overloaded not when in neutral burning less than 1 gph at 3,000+.

Maybe I have the fuel/hp curve around here somewhere I can post back.....
