    Inverter/Charger misbehaving-gctid808564

I know I'm going to get all sorts of advice and opinions on this one, however. I have a 2004 Xantrex Freedom 2500 inverter/charger that was on the boat when I bought it and I have been chasing quirky things with it ever since. I have four new golf cart batteries to power the inverter and it is on an isolated circuit for both the 120 and 12v. When charging the unit insists on charging on a gel cel setting no matter what I set manually. This makes the batteries boil and never back away from that. On the inverter side, it operates electric tools just fine but when I tried to make coffee with my Kerig (700 watts) last weekend, it blinked of in less that one second. Same with the microwave.

I know the new units are mostly better than what was built in 2004, and Magnum and Mastervolt seem to be the popular brands around here, but popular doesn't always mean there aren't other worthy brands out there. I had Xantrex on my last boat and was very happy with it and the customer service folks have been great as I've tried to figure the charging side out. Not being able to quietly make a cup of coffee is a nonstarter.

Any other good brands out there in the under $1,600 range? I'm using that number because that's what I can buy most any of the popular units for.

Magnum MS is in your price range and is a proven winner. Didn't take me long to decide after having Xantrex.

its to bad because the unit you have is usually good and reliable. I have used nothing but them in my boats and motorhomes.

But like anything it can go bad.

I took it to S3 in Seattle yesterday. What a great experience! Everyone was positive and helpful. It's obvious they do high end mega yachts, but they are aware of the larger "everyday" market. There was none of the "that's so old" or "you want even have this looked at?" that we all run into. I'll find out the economics of repair or replace next week.

I got the call from S3 this morning. I was told the main board was doing all sorts of strange things. It was replaced and behaving quite well now, kinda like the story of the bad mouthed parrot after seeing the frozen turkey. $390 later it is ready for pickup. I said tomorrow, something about a 35 minute mid morning drive to Seattle running two hours this morning made that decision easy.
