  • Chain size for lewmar windlass 3587/4087-gctid805710

I bought a 1996 3587 but the windlass was missing the chain. I believe from the look of the lewmar winch it is a cpx0 model ( it's not all chrome bottom half grey). The gypsy says 002.

I have emailed lewmar, called dealers and I can't find out what size chain it takes. Different sites have it listed 1/4" to 3/8. I believe it takes 5/16 G4 chain, but I dint want to spend $200 and have it not work.

What size chain do other 3587/4087 boats have?

    Thanks

I haven't found all the numbers you have (mind you I haven't looked that close) but ours has 3/8" chain gypsy. We currently have 200' of chain, I'm considering adding 200' of 5/8" three strand nylon for the just-in-case scenario or occasional deep anchorage.

The 3/8" chain is a bit heavy but the windlass seems to do okay with it. Our boat is a 1995 model.

I was a little surprised to hear that a 3587 had 3/8" chain. Our 4087 and our 490 both had 5/16" BBB chain which was adequate for the boat weight and size.

We have 400ft of 3/8" chain on our 5788.

Look at the chain gypsy where the chain link notch is it may have the chain size stamped on it.

The link from boatworkfl has the gypsy in MM only, my gypsy says 002, I have seen info for CPX0 with gypsy's arked in MM, I have seen newer winchs (V700, etc.... with 002 gypsy but nothing that tells me my model with my gypsy. I have tried the technical support email on lewmars web site (I cant get an actual phone number). I have not gotten a response from several emails. I am now trying to contact dealers.

I just hate to spend hundreds of dollars in chain to have it being the wrong size.

Thanks everybody for all your help.

On the Lewmar site it says the 002 Gypsy is for 10mm DIN 766, Campbell 3/8" S4 chain.

Our 4788 came with 5/16"chain and we had 275 feet of chain and another 200 feet of rope.

              Cheers,

              Mark

Scroll down on the site and there is a chart that gives both metric and inches for chain size.

I don't know where you live but I live in spokane Washington. If you end up needing 1/4 ht chain then I have 300 feet of new galvanized chain. Sells for about $5 a foot. I'll sell it for half that.

My lewmar 700 used 1/4 ht chain but I sold the windlass before I could use the chain.

Thanks yachtman I am in Maryland.

The info above gives specs for CPX0 with MM numbers on the gypsy, mine says 002. I looked at another site and they have the Lewmar V2 series with the 002 gypsy and it says "ÔÇóRope-chain gypsy (002) handles G4 5/16" chain and 1/2"-5/8" rope ".

I have seen this gypsy (002) listed with several different models and they all vary on what chain to use from 1/4 to 3/8".

I did find a number to US tech service, I will let you know what I find.

                    Thanks for all your help.

Could you just remove the gypsy head and take it to your local marine store and test chain size from all their stock??

                        002 10mm DIN 766, Campbell 3/8" S4 12-16 1/2 - 5/8 3-strand and 8-plait (5/8 only) CPX1/2/3

                        Go buy a 3 or 4 link of chain and see how it fits;

I re-built a Lewmar windlass last year, I was not able to get ahold anyone from Lewmar or a dist. that could help.

I made all my own gaskets, seals and bearings are available at any bearing shop or ebay, and then had the case powdered coated.

I think I am going to either try to remove the gypsy or buy a foot of chain. I just talked to the technical service guy at lewmar (by the way I found this number on thehulltruth, lewmar does not post it) If anyboy wants the number it is 203-458-6200.

He told me if I have a 002 gypsy it takes 5/16 G4 chain. I know above it says 3/8 for the 1/2/3 model but I believe I have a concept 0 (CPX0).

                            Thanks
