Upcoming Summer vacation Lake Champlain to Newport RI, marina recommendations...-gctid803046

Well spring is coming and we are hard at work planning summer vacations. This year we are staying more local (as opposed to last year where we sailed the Eolian Island in Sicily for 2 weeks, plus another 2 weeks in Sicily itself)

Anyhow the destination is selected which is Newport RI (we have friends that rented several houses) thus we are taking our boat from North of Lake Champlain NY to Newport and back.

Going down we know where to stop, Kingston NY at the municipal dock because the city is marvelous, then Liberty Landing in NYC.

We are looking for some advice for the portion from NYC to Newport RI. I do have some friends that went that way last year but it turned out ugly, stuck in sand at fire island and ultimately they had to turn around in Montauk because of nasty waves (that happens)

So I would like to stay on the Long island sound and dock at the best places, aka read historic places, fine dining, very european looking or stunning views or best all of it.

Thus if you have good experiences for the NYC - Newport RI part please share. Oh and by the way in Newport we are thinking of staying at the Newport Yachting Center..

    Thanks in advance

You do not say if you have kids aboard,, like a mooring occasionally or what is your most wanted but there are so many places to stop you are going to have a real problem figuring out which to miss.

Here are just a few and then maybe if you ask questions we can try and answer some....

    - Norwalk , town dock or Norwalk cove

    - Northport , town dock or Britania

    - Pt Jefferson, Danfords

    - Clinton Ct , Cedar island

    - Essex Ct , Essex Island

    - Essex, Hamburg cove mooring

    - Greenport , Townsends or Brewers (townsends walk to town)

    - Mystic Ct , the Seaport (walk to great aquarium , shopping and taxi to Sub museum)

    - Montauk, the MYC or Star Island (if you have never been spend the extra once and MYC)

    - Block Island , old harbor area, Champlins if you like action, Boat basin if not , taxi to town , dinghy to beaches

Although that is not a complete list you have some of the best stops here. IMHO - Mystic and BI are both stops that are hard to pass up and each requires at least 3 days to cover all the fun stuff to do and has plenty pf places to eat of just some great views.

There are also marinas at or nearby old train museums, gambling , and everything in between.

Also - watching your tides and currents through NYC and Long Island sound can be very helpful.

Perhaps pick up a copy of Eldridges Tides and currents book for 2017, it will be well worth the $12.
