    Engine Failure-gctid396506

Ok, limped back with port engine failure today.

Just got the boat back last week from from marina that replaced my old points distributor with a Mallory electronic conversion with coils, cap and spark plugs. Had the impellors and water pump replaced and rebuilt the carburators this winter. Took the boat on 5 hr trip this weekend with no problems, then after a 1 hour trip today, we started back and the port eng started running rough and suddenly quit. Tried restarting and it started but put into gear and it quit again. We left it and limped back to port. Waited 15 min and got her started again and ran her again till she died again 15 min later.

My guess is that it might be temp related and ignition related since i had no issues prior to the electronic conversion? I only replaced these for better efficiency and more reliability. I am stuck 5 hrs away from home port, so if anyone has any guesses- i would be happy to hear advice or thoughts?

I would put the old distrib, coil, etc back in and try it,but before doing so check the gas filters.

Both engines run off the same tank ? See to me a vent issue would take about 15 to build up a vacuum.

So what are you missing fuel or spark. When the engine conks out pull off a spark plug wire and insert a spare plug and hold it to the block see if you have spark.

Post back we will go from there.

Like I said- she runs and then when its at temp she starts to run rough and quits.

If spark issue, then it would start rough and quit right away, no. Or if fuel filter it would be same no? ( filters changed in fall too).

What is the temp gauge reading?

Could this be a bad coil ?

Possibly swap coil from running engine to test?

            Good Luck

Just about to go for test run- replaced both resistors from distributor to coil. Since it seemed temp related.... Thats what made sense since all other parts were brand new except resistirs.

              We'll know in an hour?

If you experience the same issue I'd start at the dip tube and follow the fuel to the motor.

I was thinking the same thing iceclimber!

But we ran the boat now and looks fine.....

So i hope it was the resistor is all it was?

I dont want to find out otherwise on our 5 hr trip home.

Well she failed again on way home.

Had rescue mission come out from marina and this time after doing more thorough analysis, determine one of the new HO coils that were just put in 2 weeks ago as part of the electronic ignition upgrade was defective... Not allowing more than 9.6V out to the distributor. This also lead to a debate wether the resistors that were replaced last week were even needed, as the voltage doesnt need to be lowered in case of electronic ignition, because no points there to be worried about burning out... Mallory apparently said you do, but we will call again to ask why?

They put in a stock coil to get me home and all seems ok now. At marina today to return coil and Make sure rescue was on the house.

Beware..... Even new parts dont work sometimes.

Kinda surprised you needed a rescue mission with one engine still running or did I misunderstand your original post indicating you had two engines.

No misunderstanding...., in trent severn system and having to manuevre in narrow channel waiting for railway swing bridges to open and go through numerous locks- i think required a rescue mission.
