A buddy gave me an 8d battery that I thought would make a fine house battery. My boat currently has 3 single deep cycle batteries and 3 single switches, house, engine start and generator. The way my boat and cables are laid out, putting the 8d on the start side (starboard) would be a bitch because of the generator exhaust etc. My thought was to combine house and generator on the port side with the 8d (mainly because it fits there) and combine a couple deep cycles in parallel for start on Port. I've never been in love with the idea of a single battery for start, but simply can't fit the 8d there without moving a bunch of cables around.

Any issues with combining house and generator on a single 8d? PS those things are freakin heavy.

I have 2 8D's and a single large automotive battery all on the port side. The automotive battery is for the gennerator, one 8D for the house and the other for start. I think that you would want to keep the start and generator on separate batteries in case one discharged, the other would be available for charging. Between the batteries and the dinghy motor on the port side, I do not have the normal 32xx starboard list. And yes, those 8D's are friggin heavy:thumb.

Sounds good. I considered stuffing a deep cycle up against the transom just for the generator but my trim tabs work hard enough as it is to get that tub on plane. This way the start(s) will be on their own and with 2 batteries in parallel I sort of have a spare. If for some reason I kill the house/generator battery, then I can move a start battery without too much trouble.
