    oil pressure gauge is erratic-gctid394378

On the cruise up north this week from Portland the starboard oil pressure gauge (Bridge and cabin both) is bouncing around between 0 and 60 at RPM's above 2400. Anything less than that we get less bouncing until they read steady at 1500 and slower. Temp gauges look good. RPM's are steady. Oil level is right on. I think it is a bad sensor or dirty wiring to the sensor/gauge.

Any other suggestions? I'll be in Port Townsend the next two days or so and wanted the folks to look at it if it is more serious or else take it to NHD in Anacortes.

I see no signature or information in your profile as to the boat/engines you have, perhaps I missed it. Mine would bounce some, but would basically change the reading after operations of 4 hours or more and go from 60 to 40 psi. I replaced the sensor and have not had it happen again. My situation was compounded by having a bad oil pressure switch as well, which can really screw with one's level of paranoia. Given you're not getting an alarm, sensor is the most likely cause.

I would clean or make sure it's tight at the sensor connection point given the working environment, just in case the problem is that simple which it usually isn't. As an aside, interesting that posts here now insert advertisements. Good luck.

Same issue with my port Hino. It was only mildly annoying, but Earl replaced the sensor and the problem went away. You might want to look at the connection first, but the sensor was pretty inexpensive.
Yep, my 4588 Bayliner IS my happy place

You need to be specific as to the type of engine/s you have. My 2000 6BTA 5.9 M3 370 hp Cummins, required replacement of the starboard oil pressure transducer @ 850 hr. ( transducer is the oil pressure sender to the gage not the alarm). Now the port engine @ 910 requires replacement ( erratic, drop to 0 psi, function normal ) . I have the PN# special for faria /USMarine/Bayliner gages. Let me know if you need it. ( the PN# in the owners manual is for VDO gages which is different #)

I have the same problem with my starboard engine on my 3988 with cummins 315. The parts number for the Faria guage would be greatly appreciated. I will start with the sender and work my way up.

Before replacing a sender, why not get yourself a reasonably good quality mechanical 0-100 psi pressure gauge to put in place of the original sender as a sanity check? They are not very expensive and are pretty handy to have around.

This will prove what your oil pressure really is and confirm if some part or parts of the electrical circuit are at fault or not. It will also give you an idea of how accurate your gauges are. Assuming that the pressure is normal you can now go on to see if the problem is with the sender, wiring, or the gauge itself.

PN# 3866218 (especially for Faria/US Marine/Bayliner gages w/ upper and lower stations) I order through my local Cummins dealer, parts dept.

I have the same problem .. but I have a single station 3788 .. The different posts say there is a difference between singles station and dual station senders ... I tried cummins and they only had one part number .. 3866218 which is for a dual station boat .. Does anyone know where I can find someone that actually knows the difference ..
