Mine was intermittant and then died. Took it to a DC motor shop and he found a solder connection to one of the brushes heated up and melted. Total Bill $50. Never heard of an armature wearing out. That's a lot of running to do that.

Guest repliedMy Muir Cougar on my 38' was working intermittently until it died completely. I took the whole unit into Jay's Starters & Alternators (Surrey BC 604-599-9554 - but I'm sure any good shop will do) and he found everything inside was corroded or in pieces. Water had gotten into the motor. He rebuilt the motor, replaced the armature etc. and sealed the entire motor and windlass for $600. I am mounting it later today.

It is shot because of what? What failed in the windlass?
If it is the motor or the windings, could an electric motor re winder or a starter shop do a rewinding job?
The actual electric motor likely operates on the same principle as your starter motors on your main engines.

I have a lofrans "tigris" windlass on my Monk 36 trawler- awesome windlass and great power. Only "issue" with that particular one is that it only works with all chain rhode which was no issue for me b/c that is what I wanted but they make others that accept both chain and line rhodes if you need that.

Just got word our windlass motor is shot, shop quoting $1200 for new motor. Armature worn.
Don't want to spend that much on old windlass, any used units available or options?
Shop quoting $2800 for new Lofrans windlass, anyone had experience with these?
