When I turn on the ignition switch and twest the key the starter solenoid will not engage usually until I twist the key several times to engage the switch. Volt meter on dash does go down a couple of volts when twisting key without engaging solenoid. I will check all connections again, but am wondering if using three rv batteries fully charged in parallel is a problem. Would starting batteries provide more juice to the starter solenoid to engage starter. The other possibility is my 1990 solenoid is getting tired.

Yes I used a ford Solenoid for about 18 dollars from a auto parts store and it works great. http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS-Performan...89022/10002/-1 Been using it for about 8 years now.

My experience says its a bad safety switch on the soleoid or a loose wire on the safety switch.

Is your preheat on while attempting to start. If so, try with no preheat.
