    4788 chain locker-gctid391462

Our chain locker piles the chain so high that it jams up at the deck entry hole and requires a person below to pull the chain down to keep the entry hole open to receive addition chain. I have 500 feet of chain and it is good chain - not light weight. Even so, it seems like the chain would stack up even with less length?

Does anyone have a solution other than my wife's which is to cut a hundred feet off? I don't think that will work anyway.

In our 47, we have 300 feet of chain and 300 feet of line. If most or all the chain has recently been used it does pile up but normally does not require someone to go below, but it has happened a couple of times. When this happens it can be a major costly issue, once it broke the gear in the windless as I had the clutch set too tight and a pile of chain piled up on deck and stopped the windless from moving. As a result I now set the clutch a lot lighter when pulling up our very heavy anchor and chain. When it comes up and starts to pile up on deck, I stop, grab the windless manual tube handle and pull out a bit of chain that has piled up in the thru hull fitting, then use the couple foot long manual tube to reach through the thru hull to knock down the pile of chain left and right. Once this has done, no further issues. Once done it won't occur again unless I let out a very large amount of chain, then watch for chain build up. You do know that the stock windless will not pull up 300 feet of chain (at least ours will not) when the anchor chain is straight down in very deep water, so all of our 300 feet has only been used just once or twice.

Hi Can you tell me how you get into the chain locker in the 4788?

      Thanks

The mirror is hinged at the top, so it will pivot aft and up.

Part of the wide molding strip that's covered in material will go with it.

Two springs from the inside will hold the mirror in the up position.

I have 300 feet of 3/8ÔÇÖ and it piles up sometimes. Like Mickey I just knock it over the winch handle through the hole.

IÔÇÖve looked into installing a deflector just forward of the hole to direct the chain aft. The locker has a lot more room aft so it should stop it from piling. Project number 345, I think.

          Andrew,

I just had a thought, if you've never been in your locker maybe you should make sure the bitter end is secured to the boat.
