    Bow Pulpit Removal-gctid719729

    I'm considering removing the pulpit, have read all the posts, but have a few questions.

    On a 2001 3988, does anyone know if the pulpit is solid fiberglass or does it have a wood core?

    Previous posts discuss removal of the entire pulpit.

    What about cutting it off at the bow, forming it to the bow, and glassing over the cut?

    Will a wood core and possible rot present problems?

    Has anyone done this?

    The idea of leaving the bolts and 5200 intact is appealing if this might work.

    I removed mine (3270) for a season or two. Had a stainless plate cut for the spot. Mine was 100% rotten, the wood inside had absorbed twenty years of water.

    I never thought to cut the original to fit, that is a novel idea. If yours is still sound then it might be a viable alternative to removal, but I assume you are drilling though it again for your new bow roller ?

      Remove it and buy a Windline BRM3 SS bow roller, you may need to cut a hole in the side of the anchor locker to get to the bolts in the anchor locker, unless you have a youngster to crawl in and help.

      More than likely the wood is rotten all the way through.

        You may have seen my post from last season were I removed the pulpit from my 3388. My boat is a 1999 and I would assume they are both made from the same material. I didn't cut into the pulpit to confirm, but I believe it is foam filled and not wood. It's certainly not heavy which makes me think it's foam as well.

        Either way -- wood or foam you could certainly cut the old one off. I think any fiberglass work to smooth out and shape the cut would be difficult and expensive unless this is a skill you have.

        On mine I ordered in a thick sheet of Marine Starboard. Made a cardboard template of the blank space after I removed the pulpit and cut the starboard to shape. I then found a decent anchor roller that I thru bolted into the anchor locker below and sealed the bolt holes with 4200. It was a job I was able to complete over 2 weekends.

          Thanks, I might make the cut, see how it goes, and continue the pulpit removal if need be.

            Good luck with the project. Take some photos and post them in the Completed Projects section when you're done.

            If you make the cut -- consider allowing it to stick about 3-4" beyond the bow of the boat or more if you're situation allows. That will provide more clearance for the anchor past the bow so you don't have the danger of the claw scratching the hull. After you make the cut, if you decide to remove the remaining piece it will be very difficult. The 4' pulpit extension acted as a lever and once we were able to get the 4200 started, it eventually peeled right off. If we were forced to use wrecking tools it would have been a mess.

              If you decide to remove it completely, try using a cable saw to cut through the sealant. I did this on my 2858 and it cut through the sealant without damaging the deck.

                On mine I used a thick sheet of Marine Starboard. I have a 25KG Ronco anchor on the bow now . It is on a 2000 3988 bayliner I will post a picture next time I go to the boat,

                    Jim,

                    I'm in the process of buying a 2001 3988, (hopefully survey and mechanical inspection are good), and one of my first projects will be to replace the pulpit in order to shorten the overall length of the boat. Can you please post how you went about it and post pictures.....it would be greatly appreciated! I've read that removing the original pulpit can be challenging.

                      I haven't removed the pulpit yet, it's still on the list but subject to approval from higher authority. Keep searching the posts, there are a number of completed projects with photos available.

                        Just unbolted my bow pulpit ,and as mentioned in previous posts I used a 5 inch hole saw in the anchor locker for easy access to the bolts. There was a ton of 5200 or 4000 sealant but with a bit of upward pressure on the bow pulpit you can get a blade to cut through the stuff then wiggle the pulpit iside to side.

                        The wood appears to be in good shape after 34 years

                        Not sure but thinking I'll cut it behind the bow and use some beefy hinges that will allow me to pivot it up when not in use, I'll also need to cut the rail close to even with the bow. The reason I undertook this project was do to the fact that I will eventually be moving to a forty foot slip instead of the 43 I'm currently in this will save me over $700 in slip fees per year.

                          Please post pictures as you make progress. I'll be posting some soon. I've already patched some damaged gelcoat, which resulting from removing the old pulpit. I've also fabricated a mock pulpit out of plywood so that I can check the fit and functionality before fabricating the permanent one. I was initially thinking of using King Starboard, but am toying with the idea of using 1/4" polished stainless. In my case, no need to hinge it since I'm going for the short nose look. In regards to the bow rail, I was lucky enough to only have to remove two set screws and forward section came off; my plan is to have a section of stainless rail welded on. In regards to the anchor, I already have a new anchor roller and a 44 lb. Bruce type claw anchor. Will post some pics when the project is completed.

                            Question I have for the experts is where would be the best location, strength wise, to install the hinge?
