    3288 rudder-gctid369267

1989 3288 with twin HINO DIESELS and damaged rudders. How much can I expect to pay for 2 new ones? Where is the cheapest place to purchase? Is this a job that I can do myself? I have some mechanical ability just not sure about the job specifics. Anyone who has done this job before or has purchased rudders please reply. MIKE

The only place to purchase the rudders is from the company that made the originals, in Redmond, Wa as I recall. Call them and get a quote. There is a 95 being parted in a separate thread, might be a lot cheaper than new if they are the same, there were some differences year to year. The company in Redmond has most of the Bayliner parts in stock. Anyone else would have to make a new casting, which would be much more expensive. Unless your mechanical experience includes casting in bronze it is not do it yourself.

Edit- company name is Marine Hardware. If you need rudders you may also need struts and shafts which they also have. Do a web search for contact info. They ship all over the world.

I bent the rudders on my 86 32xx and replaced just the rudders not the housings on the transom. They were 1500 a piece. They have them as current production parts. Marine Hardware in Redmond, Wa.

If the rudders are bronze, and the shafts are SS, it is possible to pull the shafts out and replace them, there are aftermarket rudders, all you need is the shaft diameter, and length, and approx. rudder size.

Look up Algonquin, and possibly Foss, and others, also look for salvage boats, there are more and more boats being junked. New rudders are quite spendy.

1.25 diameter stainless steel shafts with bronze rudders. I contacted marine works and they wanted $1500 . OUCH!!! I found a local welder here in Virginia that fixed the shafts and both rudders for $700. I suggest you do the same. Unless you are rich.
