Earl is just finishing up a major service (long overdue) on both our engines. Boy do they look great! We are very impressed with his knowledge and abilities, and we would never have found him without the BOC. Without Earl, this job would never have been accomplished. He knows Hinos!

What did you name the other engine? Had friend that named his two engines after two ex wives. Figured he was always cursing them so they really needed a name. He named his gen set after a boss that once fired him.

MY husband named them Mary Kate and Ashley. He almost went with Zsa Zsa and Eva but figured that was too old school.

I'm not a mechanic, but in layman's terms...
We knew one head needed a gasket. So we pulled the head and had it gone over, refurbed the injectors, pulled manifold and risers for cleaning and ceramic coating, replaced the transmission cooler.
After pulling the injectors on the second engine, there was a problem with the tubes so we pulled the head on that engine too and did all the same things. Also new hoses, clamps, etc. There's more, but I don't have the invoice in front of me. All we did basically filled a whole page. The engines hadn't been touched practically ever. Wouldnt have been long before we started having problems. Besides the gasket issue, we never noticed anything wrong, but I'm sure they weren't performing at their best. I can't wait to see how they run now...

20 year old engines, ran good but never serviced beyond oil changes, minor repairs by PO.
Long overdue.

Here's a pic of a finished Ashley. Took it for a ride this weekend with Earl and Jolene and they sure ran nice. Really, really appreciate all Earl did.

Well, I can't give you an estimate because each boat is different in its needs. I can tell you that Earl is worth every penny. I'm positive that the first mechanic we had lined up would not have been able to do the job, even if he could have found all the parts (Earl can and did). I also believe I would still be looking at a torn apart engine with no end in sight if I hadn't had the Hino Guru
Yes, it was more than I had originally hoped, but we added a lot more to the job as needed work became apparent. Remember, these engines ran fine but had never really had any work done. 20 years takes its toll and its not always visible til you start working. We should have done some of these things years ago. I am more than completely satisfied with what Earl did and I know I got my money's worth because of his knowledge of these engines.

Yes, irieblue is correst, each boat repair repair cost are unique and is depended on too many items to list here. I can only comment on the work Earl preformed on my boat this spring.
1) Removed both manicoolers, clean and ceramic coat. No cracks or welding repairs, whew!
2) Removed injectors, check, clean and/or repair. Only had 1 of 8 that was bad. Earl cleaned and it popped correctly
3) Replaced oil coolers
4) Adjucted lifters
5) Install K&N Air filters
6) New Antifreeze and radiator caps
7) Clean/repair overflow bottles
8) Buff clean all parts and mating surfaces
9) Was able to re-use exh manifold gasket. No other major gasket replacement
10) 2 days of Earl's time.
Grand total $3,800. PortHoleDriver I hope this helps you. The cost of repair can escalate if there are crack, component repalcement, extensive rebuilds, etc. So bottom line to me is keep up with your maintenance, my purchased boat was in need of a major intervention, look for tail-tell signs of problems, (leaks, unusual noise) ask lots of question of your fellow boaters and here on BOC.
Good luck and save your pennys for those unexpected repairs.

FWIW - Earl is the best and these costs are just not that high when adjusted for the years of non maintenance.
"Grand total $3,800." - IMO is a very good number for that extensive amount of work for those that have not done it.
If these items were defferred even longer that is when the bills really start to get scary - refer to your maintenance schedules.
The old car statement of "Pay me now or pay me later" can really apply here.
So please do this stuff before it becomes a really large issue where manicoolers, turbo's, heads, pistons and the like become part of the bill.
Good news is that Hino's run for 25 plus years with little attention.
Bad news is that with less than little attention nothing runs forever.
Hope this helps

"Compare that cost to the price of just a single manicooler replacement casting (if you can get it) to see if it is worthwhile."
Well said - or maybe compare it to a Cummins intercooler, or two RWP R & R's , or a Perkins exhaust mani, or a Yammar exhaust manicooler, or even a set of Caterpillar turbo's. The color of the engines does not matter - and although the parts names might be different the pain from neglect becomes a given over time.
Hope this helps
