  • where to place the autopilot head?-gctid362157

So 3870 owners i'm getting ready to install a Garmin Auto Pilot and i'm looking for a suitable location for the GHC 10 (the controller face)?

    Suggestions would be very appreciated

I'm not sure about the 38, but following a suggestion from Billsguns, I mounted mine in the large blank space between the port and starboard gauges on the bridge dash.

Perhaps I can tell you where not to install auto pilot parts. On our 47, the factory installed the controller attached to the bottom of the salon floor above the exhaust hose such that you need to have 7 foot arms to get close to it without removing the port engine exhaust. The factory installed the sensor in the very corner of the port transom, right next to the gen set exhaust. When I purchased the 47 new, the salesman helped me transfer our 38 full of stuff rafted up and he placed a full size shovel (for clams) on top of the sensor. It took two visits to Lake Washington Olympic boats to fix the auto pilot. That was after they twice replaced the controller.

I've installed the GHP-10 and will go to the boat tomorrow and take pictures and send if you send me your email address. Basic's I rebuilt the genset panel where the gauges were and installed it there also installed the 4212 on top of the panel. This is the panel in the center of the lower helm. Took some 3/4 plywood and fabric from the local sewing store, hole saws and time......about 2 beverages and you are done.

I installed the LCD above the lower helm in the upper compartment. Simply made my own mount since it is intended to be dash mounted.

Going out for the first cruise of the year this weekend, perhaps I can get some photos.
