  • Northern Lights gen set - oil change challenge-gctid340249

The 3270 we recently bought has a Northern Lights M643 (4.5 kw) gen set in it. I want to change the oil, but am having a heck of a time getting a fitting that works with the stock "oil change" hose that's attached to the bottom of the oil pan. Once I find out, I need an adapter to convert it to garden hose fitting - but that' part's not a problem

Does anyone have any idea of what the (female) threads are on these things are?

I'll see if I can find a pic.Garden hose fitting worked great on the Hino's. And I figure since you can buy a brass manual pump with this fitting already on it (factory) - I'm not the only one. It really did work great - I have no reason to change it.As for the geni - I did get the oil out, using the custom adapter the PO told me about (it's called 1/2 roll of electrican's tape). But I still want a better solution. During my hunt I did spend some time with a few parts manuals and found that at one time Northern Lights sold a fitting that adapted the female fitting on the engine to a hose barb. That would work great for me - so I said I'd take it. Turns out it's been obsolted and the replacement part is a whole new assembly, totally different again - and it's $$..so the hunt continues!EDIT:Found a few "sketches"what i have (items #3,4,and 5):

If your Hinos have garden hose fitting someone replaced the brass fitting with garden hose fittings. Not sure they did you a favour.

I have an 8kw Northern Lights on my 3888 so I am not sure if the setup is similar to your unit. On mine you can change oil either by sticking a tube down the dipstick hole, or buy a special cap for the oil fill pipe on the front starboard side of the engine. I did not like the dipstick suck-out method, and am too cheep to buy the over priced special oil fill cap. So what I did was buy an extra regular oil fill cap and modified it by installing a brass fitting in it to fit my oil suction hand pump. If you can use this method, it is fairly easy to modify the cap and it works great. Hope this helps. larryw

My 38xx 175 Hinos and Westerbeke gen set have the fittings to the oil pan also. Mine each has a brass plug in the female fitting to close off the tube. I took the male ends to a hardware store and matched up the threads for an open pipe (brass) and adapted it to a garden hose fitting. I had bought a small pump from fleet farm (120v) and mounted it in the engine compartment. This enabled me to connect the hose on the pump and drain both Hinos and the gen set. If this is what you are trying to do you might look into the idea.

good question - the oil change hoses on both mains (Hino's) have garden hose fitting already installed, and the pump is set up to attach directly to them. I'm simply looking for consistency in the engine room.

Why are you planning on using a garden hose fitting? Typically, these fittings mated up to hydraulic hose and fittings. I would hesitate to use garden hose fittings for this application.
