  • Liveaboard questions???

For the folks that are either living on your boat, or planning on living on your boat...

Do you maintain a home base dock?

Or... Are you cruising from place to place?

I have been living on my boat most of the time since july 2017. Until a year ago May I was dock based as I had to work.

Now that I am retired I find myself cruising more, but mentally I still need to maintain a "home port"

Kevin, We live aboard from June to the end of September the boat is located in southern Puget Sound, we spend the rest of the year down south in the desert. Our situation may be different because our kids and grandkids live in the area and we own our covered slip. We find having a dedicated home base is advantages for our life style, we have a near by storage unit that we use to expand the storage space available on the boat. For us the additional storage is a marriage saver. So between family, friends and storage a permanent home port works best for us...

We’ve been full time liveaboards for just over 7- years now. We too have a storage unit at our Marina that not only provides us with a way to keep out of season clothes etc off the boat when not in use; but I’ve adapted it to a pretty complete workshop. I’m retired but my wife still works for the state inspecting hospitals every other week and from the boat the other weeks. Having StarLink allows us to be anywhere those weeks and we’ll often take the boat to the nearest marina for that weeks survey. Having a Home Port is necessary for the time being but I’m hoping that once she retires we’ll be full time cruisers and spend more time on the hook than here in Tacoma. It’s been 7 years and we still have a few household items not suitable for the boat but too highly valued (sentiment only) so I suspect a storage unit will always be in our future.

I kept my slip in La Paz and they rent it out for me when I traveled north to Ensenada this summer.

The marina provides a sense of community and stability

I see some of you own 47 Bayliners I just joined the site today looking for some answers regarding a 47 I'm looking at. The Broker says it needs a port fuel tank replaced. Has anyone dealt with that issue and can possibly shed some light on the project Finding a new one isnt the problem its removal and installation.
