Bayliner 4087 Upper Helm Shift Cable Broken

I recently sold my 4087 but trying to help the new owner. The Port Engine shift cable just broke at the upper helm. Has anyone had to replace theirs? Any info on the part number?

Does anyone know where the upper help shift cables combine with the lowe4 helm cables? There is only 1 connection on the transmission.

The shift and throttle cables from the upper helm terminate at the lower helm station. I believe that the part number is printed on the cable itself....but I'm sure someone else can provide more detailed information.

Year and make of control box should be visible. . If it's a cable problem I would recommend looking on line for shifter cables. I'm in an 82 explorer. The first of the explorers. Every thing ages and wears. I'd replace and renew.

Does anyone know the part number for an upper helm port shift cable for a 1998 4087 and is the replacement fairly straight forward? We had a cushion fall in between on the lower helm in a precarious situation on the way out between other Yachts and my quick response was to muscle it through and the plastic attaching grommet broke. During my inspection I noticed it was installed in the wrong side of the quadrant and a large bend is in the threaded tip. Not the cause but maybe it happened for a good reason🤔.

I have replaced my cable but cannot recall the part number….it is printed on the side of the cable….use the broken Cable as a pull to feed down to the lower station. It will enter the lower cabin via the white Plastic channel between the two windows next to the lower station. You may find it easier to get the number off the cable that sits behind that plastic channel. I replaced both shift cables at the same time as my thought was that if one was deteriorated enough to brake the other was most likely not far behind..

unfortunately, I cannot recall where the box was located, but I am thinking it was just underneath the shifter in the lower station.

my boat is located on the east coast and I am currently in Alberta, so I cannot confirm the actual location til next week whic is when I am home again.

Replacing the cables is a straight forward job. However, I suggest replacing all eight cables. Each cable has the length in inches imprinted at one end. It doesn’t matter which end goes where because both ends of each are the same….which is why some will be installed with the numbers at the upper helm and rest will have the numbers at the lower helm. You will probably find that all four of the upper helm to lower helm cables are the same length or two longer than the other two. From the lower helm to the engines and transmissions will probably be all different. The cables are “daisy chained” at the lower helm. Note carefully which holes in each handle is occupied by the connectors of a given cable, and the distance each barrel nut adapter is from the respective end of the cable. It will probably be easiest to remove the control handle from the dash. It’s likely that two of the mounting fasteners will be screws and the other two will be bolts.
Adjusting the cables is certainly a two person job, and communication is a challenge. I start with the lower helm and use our wireless headsets. Another option would be cell phone with a hands free setup. Confirm the adjustment of the cables with the engines running, then go ahead with the upper helm. The two important adjustments here are that the throttles go all the way to idle, and the shifter is bang on the neutral safety switch. If the shifter isn’t right on, the new owner is going to be doing a lot of the Bayliner shuffle. Moving the shifter back and forth while holding the key in the start position looking for the sweet spot.
